Nilofer resigns as Tourism Minister?
Essa Naqvi
ISLAMABAD — Rumours of Nilofer Bakhtiar’s resignation as Ministr for Tourism were rife in the political circles in the federal capital here Friday. Interestingly, nobody, neither Nilofer herself, her PRO nor any one from amongst the PML-Q leadership, denied these ‘rumours’.
When contacted on phone, Nilofer’s cell phone was powered off. Her PRO Naeem said that he too was not sure of the resignation, since the minister’s mobile was ‘powered off’ and she didn’t make any statement to deny the news of her resignation. He also said that he didn’t receive any instructions from the minister to tackle the media approaching him for the official version.
Talking to TheNation, PML-Q Secretary Finance and Administration Imtiaz Ranjha and Central Media Coordinator Mustafa Malik said that they too had heard these rumours but could not confirm it since Nilofer was not in contact with the party office bearers.
Another close party associate of Nilofer, Farzana Malik, also did not deny the news of Nilofer’s resignation. She, instead, said that Nilofer might have handed over her resignation to Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz but since she did not have any contact with the minister, she could not confirm it.
The rumours of her resignation have started striking the political circles at a time when the internationally certified liberal and champion of women rights, Nilofer Bakhtiar, is being completely ignored by her party after she resigned from the slot of President PML-Q Women Wing last month.
She has also been missing the important party meetings since her resignation from the part slot. She was not present at the President’s power show held on May 12 and was also not available for the party’s stick-wielding rally held on April 24 at the Parade Avenue.
PML sources told TheNation that the minister was asked to resign from the presidentship after so many complaints of ‘misconduct’ piled up against her.
It is pertinent to mention here that Nilofer has been under fire since she got global fame of her being liberal as she hugged a French paraglider after her air jump.
Although the party leadership did not publicly condemn her, it took serious note of the cheap publicity she won at the cost of country’s prestige. Moreover, a fatwa against her by the religio-extremists of Lal Masjid, Ghazi brothers, added fuel to the fire.
They sources said that a number of noted female Leaguers had already turned against her after she used indecent language for them. At one point of time, it is learnt, the issue was even brought into the notice of President Gen. Pervez Musharraf besides the party leadership. Notwithstanding the demand made time and again, Nilofer did not apologize for the objectionable language.
Interestingly, Nilofer Bakhtiar had also stopped her close colleagues from participating in a protest rally staged against Lal Masjid’s enactment of Shariah. The rally was arranged by female Leaguers belonging to her opposite camp within the party.
But the Ghazi brothers did not spare their ‘well-wisher’ and demanded her sacking from the cabinet for the ‘obscene act’ she committed by hugging her French paragliding instructor.
The sources, however, insist that her latest demonstration of liberalism was not the only reason behind the leadership’s decision to fire her from the presidentship of the women wing. The decision was instead taken before she left for France.
“Nilofer Bakhtiar had already started losing support even of her close colleagues like Farah Khan at top of the list,” the sources said. According to the party sources, Farah Khan decided to part her ways with Nilofer when the later insulted her and used indecent language.
“She is no way less than Wasi Zafar. She is instead ahead of him,” one of her colleagues commented while elaborating the nature of language she has been using time and again.
It has also been learnt that Nilofer last time came to the PML Central Secretariat some two weeks ago and before going back she also visited her office in the secretariat. There, she asked the office bearers to pack up all her pictures pasted on the office walls and send them to her house.
While the rumours of her resignation as minister are yet to be confirmed or denied by Nilofer Bakhtiar, it is for sure that her political career is going through a very critical phase, which may take any turn any time.
