You know I asked the same question to our imam last year but I phrased it differently. My question was: Is it ok to do one Islamic Nikah which is just between the guy and the girl (and ofcourse gawahs) and then another one openly where families of both sides are involved and the relatives show up? He did some research and told me there was nothing wrong with that as long as the Nikah was with the same girl.
In other words, yes, that’s possible but it may create some problems in the long run.
