They are far from it, actually. I agree there. But, then again, we’re far from Islam, as well. So, we can see how that make sense…
And, the issue isn’t “standing at the nikkah.” The thread title says Nikakh at altar. The problem is the altar. As far as my knowledge goes, Christians are the ones who usually get married at an altar.
We can’t hide the altar part by saying “standing at nikkah.”
It’s like saying, “what’s wrong with walking around a fire 7 times during nikah”?
The altar itself is an imitation.
