New York

Movies Ok. Not a total waste, but can wait to be released on DVD. End was not so great.

John is good, improving with experience.
Kat's ok.
Neil Nitin proved to be a bad actor.
The best and most meaningful song Aye Saaye Mere by Pankaj Awasthi missing in the movie.

3 stars out of 5.

Re: New York

So can I post my review back again of the movie? I guess so, so here you go. This is my whole blog entry this time. Not some parts of it.

Today was it’s first day of release. It was just a sudden plan to watch it and when I bought two tickets for it, mine were the last two before the show became full. Me and mom watched New York. Dad and siblings went Transformers 2 and mom is like mera itni action wali english movie dekhne ka dil nahi kar raha so I am like come with me!!!

I made a huge scene in front of Marble Slab Creamery and finally she agreed. While I was line waiting to buy tickets she went and prayed and came back. Me and mom caught the 4 o clock show of New York. Anyways so I was in line waiting and I saw so many of my fellow AUD mates and Tauseef waved towards me and I am like oye kaunsi film dekhne lagge ho? He is like New York and I was like mai bhi!!! He is like kathey dekhte hain? I was like lol not even in your dreams aur waise bhi mere saath mom bhi dekheingi. He laughed and he is like acha acha. He always teases me around, even in university. LOL funny thing is most of my friends in university are guys! :frowning: I know very little girls. I usually hang out with Tauseef, Feroz, Syed and Anshul. Infact while watching the first half of New York I felt like I was Katrina and Samir was Tauseef and Omar was Syed.

Ok fine so me and mom went in to Megaplex 6 and watched New York!

To all of the people who think New York’s music is crap, I would say you are CRAP! I love the song Hai Junoon!

Hai Junoon Hai Junooon sa Jeene Maiiiiii !!! Hai Junoon sa Seeeney Mai!!! WOHOOOOOO

I loved how the movie went along. It was very smooth. I loved the college that all of the three friend’s go to. I love the greenery. I love the scene of the Hai Junoon song where Neil Nitin Mukesh vomits and John Abraham carries him and Katrina is like bummer hehe. Even my mom loved the song! I know it by heart already! Hai Junooooon!!! When I was watching the first part of New York before intermission I was having the feeling that Omar ( Neil N Mukesh ) is falling in love with Katrina and same thing happens. It always happens if your best friend is a girl/guy. It is not always 100 platonic. Then that theif scene happens and Katrina says I love you baby to Samir ( John ).

The first half of the movie is very upbeat and it builds up to what is going to happen in the second part. The first part is about basically Omar coming from Delhi to study and how they go through college etc. How they develop their friendship etc. The real tragic stuff happens in the second part after intermission. I absolutely cried my eyes out and shouted loudly ke yeh unfair hai when the FBI shoot Katrina on the roof at the end!!! I was shouting par Maya ki kya ghalti hai!!! She didnt do anything wrong!!! Mom was telling me to quite down because everyone was staring at me. I broke down in tears!!! I cried even more when I saw Omar crying. He is a the godfather of Maya and Samir’s son and takes care of him after both Samir and Maya die on the roof.

The movie is so lovely, I cannot even stop talking about it. It made me cry so many times.

  • Once was when in the beginning Samir get’s hurt and is lying on the road and Katrina is like are you alright baby? I love you baby I love you baby and John is like I love you too and Neil N M is in tears and did not know Katrina loves Sam and starts crying and then goes away.
  • Once when Neil M is arrested and brought to the detention centre and he shouts wildly ke mai terrorist nahi hoon!!!
  • Once when I saw Neil M shoot Yaqub and Yaqub falls down and Neil M’s hand is shaking and he is in tears.
  • Once when John Abraham is in the very tiny cell all naked and he is being tortured.
  • Once when Irfan Khan the FBI Agent says to Neil N M that eik Mussalman hi dosrei Mussalman ko seedha rasta dikhasakta hai and only a muslim can help out another muslim. Now it is up to us!
  • Lastly when Maya aka Katrina is shot and dies. I cried so much then!!!

Danyal the son of John and Katrina in the movie is the cutest kid ever and I love it when he says something to Irfan Khan at the end and the way Irfan Khan replies!

The movie was amazing!! When it finished and the hai junoon song came in the credits, everyone in the cinema got up and we were singing hai junoon in full volume and when the credits and song got over everyone clapped and exited! The movie was very impactful! Like at the end before the credits, they tell you that in January Barackk Obama ordered the closure of Guantanamo Bay?! I had no idea! Also the way they showed everything in the movie it was so close to the reality. It was just amazing. It was even better than Khuda Ke Lye! Khuda Ke Lye was nice but this movie made me cry!!! It was too good!!!

Yarooo jo khud par ho yakeen, tu zindagi ho haseeen!!! HAI JUNOON HAI JUNOOOON SA SEENE MAI!!!

Hai Junoon is officially my most favourite song and my most favourite song of 2009 belonging to my most favourite movie of 2009!!! New York rocks, two thumbs up!!

May I know why you are saying Neil M proved to be a bad actor? I thought he did quite well.

Did your mom like it or was it just you :)

Re: New York

We both liked it. It was an amazing movie, and it is evident by all my friends doing positive facebook statuses about it!

Re: New York

**New York fails to break new grounds on the issue of illegal detention post 9/11 and the plight of innocent Muslims who are affected by it. It’s a very weak film for a sensitive issue.. Rating: 2/5

Review
New York is a weak film despite all the efforts and could not match up to the prior work done on this issue by films like Khuda Kay Liye and Shoot on Sight. I can’t help but compare this film with Khuda Kay Liye and regret how New York fails to ‘weave-in’ its characters and their story in its central theme. There by, director Kabir Khan fails to come up with a well structured plot and story, while trying to address sensitive issues of American Muslims, illegal detention, terrorism and religion.
The film’s focus wobbles and none of the issues is addressed properly. Sameer and Omar could have been more substantial and deep characters, in order to strike a chord with the audiences. It was as if their identity as Muslims (which was so crucial to theme) made no difference to their characters except for the fact that their religion made them a soft target for the FBI.
It seemed as if the Yash Raj’s utopian and eye-candy style of filmmaking did not gel well with a sensitive theme like this which was only glided upon. John Abraham tried his best to do justice to his role. Katrina Kaif delivers an impressive performance as an actor. Neil Nitin does his bit well.
Verdict
The film doesn’t leave that haunting impact on you, yet its watchable.

Re: New York

Just from the promos - um New York students don't act like that. :) but it's bollywood... a sense of reality is really not a requirement

Re: New York

I liked it.. thought it was a decent movie.
