NYA:
yaar.. 'A' train is one of the best lines in NYCTA.. You can take it all the way from harlem to WTC. I used to take it when I needed to hit downtown from my school in Uptown. I used to take the 'D' train sometimes when my pallies needed to go to Rockefeller Center. Then switch over to 'F' to get home to Queens...
Man!!! Those were the days!! I miss/love NYC!!!!!!!!!!!
BTW, I'll be in NY this weekend. Yahooo!! :)
Manhattan, the hub of global finance, is a small island sold by the Native Indians to the white settlers for trinkets, like beads, etc. This is where the excitement is and "the city never sleeps" or "the big apple" refers to Manhattan only.
Rent is exhorbittant and whenever there is a vacancy or new apts. going up in Manhattan, there is usually a long line-up.
During lunch break or after work in Manhattan - the streets are a sea of people; it's an interesting sight. One can tell a tourist by their gawking at the tall buildings - Manhattan is a great place to visit but expensive.
The surrounding burroughs comrising NYC: queen, brooklyn, etc are Manhattan's hinterland which supplies Manhattan with its labour pool. It's very difficult to commute to Manhattan. From Long Island, where I lived, it used to take me almost 1.5 hr to get to Wall Street. I tried driving a few times - took me forever to get to Manhattan. The subways clearly smelled of urine.
Eating in Manhattan is a delight : the variety and quality can't be beat.
Manhattan is also the home to the Broadway theatres; New Yokers really love their theatres; again, long queue is the norm.
It's hustle and bustle all the time in Manhattan but you stop a person for directions and he/she will go out of the way to give you directions.
Anyways, as I did not live in Manhattan and only worked there; the surrounding areas of Manhattan look similar to the average landscape in USA.
The quality of life is just not there in NY. If one seeks quality of life, then other cities like San Deigo, San Francisco rank on the top. NYC is nowhere in the top 10.
There is no place like NewYork!!!!!
Wesay wo kia mahavra hei....Poliye munjhay tu ki janay shaanaaN anaarkali diyaaN:)

NYAhamadi Paji,
I understand NY has a tendency to grow on people like fungus grows on trees..looks like the same has happened to you.
I had first hand experience of riding the 'A' train when I was a student at Columbia University (in the late 80s, early 90s). Having to carry ten dollar bills to appease muggers and junkies was really painful, especially when as a student I suffered from that chronic condition that all students suffer from
called 'funds_are_low'. You've probably never had anyone stick a knife in your face and ask you for money.. I've seen that happen and believe me it was not a pretty sight. All New Yorkers seem to be in a hurry to get nowhere. Broadway, Museums, Art galleries, the Village are all good but not enough to drag me back to that jungle..because I decided to settle down in
a quiet little town in Pennsylvania (where America starts). Every place is within a ten minute car ride..we get to breathe the fresh countryside air, eat the shofly pie and when in season, get to drink fresh apple cider. The Amish people's hospitality matches that of the 'pindwallas' in you 'pind'..only they 'pindwallas' offer you lassi and here we get treated to apple cider. I think this is an ideal place to raise my kids.
Maybe Mayor Juliani is doing a better job of cleaning up NYC than Mayor Koch did.
antidote
missing out on good ol philly? :)
Dear Antidote,
Mayor Guiliani stinks! He has ruined the city, he is a dictator of the worst kind. I hope that Hillary kicks his butt.
Getting mugged on the train is not unique to New York only, and judging the City by its crime rate is incriminating. Those Junkies and muggers you talk about are people like everyone else. They need help, not made fun of. By the way, I am also enrolled at Columbia and I take the A train any time, day or night. Also, I have been mugged in Lahore at a gunpoint, but I will always love Lahore no matter what. I have had a few incidents here as well, but not enough to demoralize me. It is a very small price to pay for living in this beautiful city.
Thank to the generosity of the New Yorkers, there are more drug treatment and rehabilitation centers in NYC Per capita than anywhere else in the world. People here believe in treatment and education, than throwing sick people into prisons. Even thought Pataki the azhole would like to see everyone in prison.
I hope you are happy wherever you live, I hope your kids, when grown, decide to go to Columbia and take the A train.
