Re: ‘New kind of militant’ behind Pakistan Karachi attack
I absolutely agree that this was a major security lapse and an intelligence failure on our part. However I absolutely do not subscribe to the notion that this was carried out by the TTP, presumably as vengeance for Bin Laden. Unless of course they had known in advance about Bin Laden’s killing and carried out months of planning for these attacks.
It is pretty clear who the real beneficiaries of this attack are. India benefit from Pakistan’s severely hampered surveillance capacity while the US gets to highlight how a country like Pakistan cannot prevent nukes falling into the wrong hands, strengthening their own case for drone attacks and Pakistan’s disarmament of nuclear weapons. The Taliban gain nothing from this, except for claiming responsibility like some jealous kid. Their crude methods have been pretty obvious over the years.
Unfortunately as has always been the case, I have no hopes of the investigation actually revealing the full truth behind these attacks. They will count on us having forgotten this ever happened in a month or so and the sad thing is we will.
