Michelle announced $70 million aid to educate girls in Pakistan

Mariam thanks Michelle for her support to strengthen Pakistan’s education sect

**
NEW YORK –** United States First Lady Michelle Obama has said “Building on Pakistan’s commitment to double education spending, the US will be investing $70 million to educate adolescent girls in Pakistan.”

She said at a White House event she hosted for Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s wife Kalsoom Nawaz. The prime minister’s daughter Maryam Nawaz was also present on the occassion.

According to a statement, **USAID’s Let Girls Learn in Pakistan programme would provide $70 million to new and ongoing USAID programmes benefitting more than 200,000 adolescent girls aged between 10 and 19 years. **“With this funding we’re going to be building more than a dozen schools and rehabilitating hundreds of others,” said the first lady. Mariam Nawaz thanked Michelle Obama for her support to strengthen Pakistan’s education sector.

“Educated girls become women who strengthen their families, communities, and countries,” said USAID Acting Administrator Alfonso E Lenhardt. “Let Girls Learn” is a US government initiative that involves the Department of State, USAID, the Peace Corps, and others to ensure adolescent girls get the education they deserve.

US set to sell new F-16 fighter jets to Pakistan to bolster partnership**

Pakistan’s sizable force of fighter jets include more than 70 F-16s, dozens of French and Chinese attack aircraft

**

WASHINGTON –** The US administration is preparing to sell eight new F-16 fighter jets to Pakistan to bolster a tenuous partnership, The New York Times newspaper quoted senior American officials as saying.

The decision comes ahead of President Barack Obama’s meeting with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, which is to be dominated by the president’s decision to extend the American troop presence in Afghanistan, the paper reported. Obama is trying to balance pressure on Pakistan with signs that the US still considers it a vital ally.

Congress was notified just days ago about the proposed sale of the additional fighters, although it is not clear if the White House plans to announce the sale of the aircraft during the visit of the prime minister who handed over three dossiers to US State Secretary John Kerry about the Indian involvement in subversive activities in Pakistan.

The new aircraft would add to Pakistan’s already sizable force of fighter jets — it has more than 70 F-16s and dozens of French and Chinese attack aircraft. But perhaps of equal importance to supporters and critics alike is the symbolic value of the sale to an ally whose relationship with the US has been marked by long stretches of acrimony in recent years.

World’s fifth-largest nuclear power –

The Federation of American Scientists, a leading group that monitors the spread of nuclear weapons, published a report that shows that Pakistan has expanded its arsenal to 110 to 130 warheads, up from a range of 90 to 110 four years ago. While those figures show a steady but expected increase, the group estimated that by 2025 the figure would rise to 220 to 250 warheads.

That would make Pakistan the world’s fifth-largest nuclear power, behind the US, Russia, China and France, but ahead of Britain, which is shrinking its arsenal. It is the nature, not the size, of Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal that tops President Obama’s agenda. Over the past two weeks, officials in Washington have said they are exploring whether a deal might be possible to halt the deployment of tactical nuclear weapons on the battlefield.

Until earlier this week officials in Pakistan had said nothing about the programme, although Foreign Affairs Secretary Aizaz Chadhary told reporters in Islamabad that the country had built low-yield nuclear weapons to counter India. It is unlikely that either side will talk publicly about nuclear weapons, but President Obama plans to raise the issue at length, according to administration officials.

However, selling Pakistan more arms is an issue that is often discussed more publicly to signal that Pakistan is acting in its role as a major non-NATO ally. Many in Congress ‘fear’ that the F-16 jets are more useful to Pakistan in its long confrontation with India. The Congress and the State Department are already in a standoff over an effort to sell used Navy cutter vessels to Pakistan earlier this year.

Nuclear weapons issue spoils Sharif’s trip to the US - Al Jazeera English

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
DC Dispatches
A reported blog by the Washington DC staff of Al Jazeera English.

Pakistan wants peace, but it has no plans to slow down its nuclear weapons programme, either.

That was the message from Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif this week in Washington. Problem is, that desire has caused problems with the White House.

So much so that the prime minister’s visit this week turned out to be nothing more than a courtesy visit. (ya sarkari kharchay par ser sappata)

But the US, like many other countries, is concerned about the growing nuclear arms race in South Asia and the proliferation of nuclear technology in the region.

RELATED: US-Pakistan talks - Nukes, India, the Taliban and China

Indeed, a senior White House official reiterated to Al Jazeera, “we are not seeking an exception for Pakistan within the Nuclear Suppliers Group to facilitate civil nuclear exports”.

The talk of nukes is one of the reasons the US and Pakistan’s relationship has faltered recently. A recent New York Times report stated the US was attempting to secretly convince Pakistan to limit its nuclear programme.

That article upset the Pakistanis.

Moeed Yusuf, a South Asia analyst at the United States Institute of Peace, said the US-Pakistan relationship is “a mess” as a result.

Re: Nawaz tour to the US:

What I was asking was in which official capacity did she travel to US, just because she happens to be loud mouth daughter of a duffer PM does not give her the right to travel to US on taxpayers money. That was the question not that she was invited to white house by Michelle. Maybe the PMLN propaganda wing will give you the answer along with more pics.

As for duffer look at the pic given to you by the pmln propaganda wing, the duffer looks so uninterested while Joe Biden is holding him. Maybe he was getting late for the shopping trip to the shops, the actual reason for his visit to US.
