I've a very simple query after going through the NYtimes article:
Lets suppose, somehow, Nawaz Sharif comes into power the same way as he came in 1991 or 1997, and given the full term of four years. Now, what difference will he make to a "common" man. And by emphasizing common, I really mean those have got pissed off due to all whatever is going on.
Will the corruption be curbed? Wont there be any more poverty, lawlessness, joblessness, power crisis and so on and so forth? Will Pakistan be an economical giant as India or SouthKorea? Wont there be any more new taxes, surcharges, penalties? (I remember his finance minister, "Surcharge" aziz)
If the answers to these questions is "No", then why the heck should Pakistani people bring him in power? When he couldnt do it in previous two terms, what magic will he do this time to bring these changes in effect.
I think those who live outside Pakistan still remember "Qarz Utaro mulk sanwaro" scam very well.
I personally think NS is better than Zardari but still its not what Pakistan need!!
I know you wre making a point, but Zardari is not the only criminal we need to get rid of, there is a huge bunch in national/provincial assemblies that we need to get rid of.
Re: Nawaz Sharif's new impression among US policy makers
Look the bottom line is that Pakistan does not need fresh elections right now......and Yes Nawaz may be marginaly better then Zardari but thats the whole point of democracy..........PPP won most seats last time around whatever the reasons may be........lets give them their tenure so they can be judged on merit next time around. As for common man's problems I have not been to country yet where the common man thinks that his well wishers are in power.
Only if current setup will allow common man to hold govt officials by neck … BTW why do you think US policy makers will care about Pakistan’s common man?
No I wasnt talking from US point of view. Its just Pakistanis that I’m more concerned about. US officials will do whats in the best interest of their country. When will we be doing whats best for Pakistan?!!

The moment we start shouting at govt officials for our rights, the moment we start following laws, the moment we (the larger Pakistani masses) become sincere to ourselves and the country.

Yes, and Zardari, the most corrupt person in the history of the country and his little sidekick Salman Taseer are farishtaz, right?
^ To you the NRO and criminals running for elections without an independent judiciary might be democracy, but to the people of Pakistan it is not. So why are you so afraid of fresh elections?
In democracy election are supposed to be every 4 or 5 years. If you hold elections every now and then, or whenever someone calls for fresh polls, all you will get is chaos.
100% agreed. Let the present system complete its tenure. If they don't perform well, people will elect some one better next time. For God sake no more mullah military adventurism.
