Roughly 42% of the total Muslim population in the US are African-Americans. This amounts to about 2.1 million people. For many years of the twentieth century the primary form of Islam that they embraced was that of the Nation of Islam. In recent years, however, many African-Americans have begun the practice of mainstream Sunni Islam.

Malcolm X's transformation into a Sunni Muslim has been influential in the move to Sunni Islam among African-Americans. His Letter from Mecca, excerpted from the Autobiography of Malcolm X, expresses this transformation.

The key factor in this transition after the death of Elijah Mohammed (the founder of the Nation of Islam) was the leadership of his son, Imam W. Deen Mohammed.

On the other hand, Minister Louis Farrakhan has continued the teachings of Elijah Mohammed and is the present leader of the Nation of Islam (NOI).

Recently, however, Minister Farrakhan appears to have begun to move toward mainstream Sunni Islam. This shift was made public at the recent conference that he convened entitled, "Islam in the New Century." The conference, held in Chicago from July 3-6, 1997, was an international Islamic conference at which Muslim scholars representing a number of schools of Islamic thought, in addition to a few scholars and activists in the NOI, gave talks. Minister Farrakhan himself spoke at length on a number of occasions, during which time he explained the process of transformation that the NOI has undergone. At one point, in the following manner, he likened this process to a plant that must produce strong roots below ground in order to survive. After the plant has become deeply rooted, the plant can produce shoots above ground without the danger of being destroyed. Now, he asserted, the NOI has come into the world above ground, the Islamic world.

What happens when we're dead? The irony is that all our questions will be answered after we die. We spend our whole life trying to figure out the truth and the only way we'll find out what it is, is to get hit by a bus. And the only comfort that religion offers is that God is driving that bus.

All racists who are prepared to die for their contry, please do that now.

Here is something that might interest you. You can email the website people to check on authentacity or for getting more stats. I found it while searching for some other stats.

Here is the Refrence

Recently someone asked in a Questions & Answers session to the present Khalifa (Hazrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad) about his view of the NOI and if I remember correctly, he said "They are a nation, though not of Islam" - pointing to few of their racist ideologies.

This is utterly disgusting, the people that whine most of the time that the main stream Islamic community have excluded them from their rightful place as Muslims themselves are branding other so-called Islamic groups as ‘not Islamic’.

Pathetic creatures, be a model. Practice what you teach and what you seek.

~Mickey~,

Calling a principle un-Islamic and calling someone 'non-Muslim' are two different things. Racism is 'un-Islamic' as practiced by NOI and there is no teaching in Islam that remotely justifies their racism.

NOI can call themselves Muslims and so can Mullah Omar & Osama bin Laden and they have every right to do so. Does that mean I believe in the same Islam as they do? Absolutely NOT! Do I consider their practices un-Islamic? Absolutely YES!

Someone was once said, 'to you your religion and to me my religion' ;-)

Take it easy. The world is full of hippos, hyPOcrites :)

out of the 2.6 million African-American Muslims, the Nation of Islam makes up only about 18,000 to 20,000.

They are just Blacks who call them selves muslims. They believe that God is Black and that blacks are superior to all other creeds. When Malcolm X visited Mecca he saw people of every colour, culture and status. He then converted to the real islam.

I think you should go to your local rental store and rent MALCOLM X. Its a great movie and Denzel Washington actually speaks some arabaic in it.
