Re: naming baby boys after angels
some random website does not a baby's name make, missy :P look at other webites and maybe a muslim baby names book?
X2, i love the name Israfil but he's such a powerful angel, I'm scared to name my child that- he is the one who will blow the trumpet signalling JD, isn't he?
Re: naming baby boys after angels
wow.....I like Israfeel......nice.
and I believe the fascination with the two names X2 mentioned is the ease of adaptation into western society.....
Re: naming baby boys after angels
^ Israfil is Raphael in English- its beautiful but its not as desi-compatible as gabriel and mikyle i think... if you went with the anglo versions, that is.
Re: naming baby boys after angels
its a lovely name but i too would be worried bout the meaning being too strong
a friend of mine named her son elias but now the confusion is between teh desi pronounciation and english version...some call him ilyas... some elias. sorta kills it for the parents.
Re: naming baby boys after angels
^ how do the parents pronounce it?
el-ee-us? or el-ee-as?
Re: naming baby boys after angels
the parents prounounce it ee lai us as to all of their gora friends
the desis prounounce it ill yaaas
they worried bout this before naming the baby that but decided who cares
turns out.. the baby doesnt respond to ill yaas and only ee lai us :D its so funny honestly.. yet confusin for the poor kid.
sure names get messed up by teh goray but ive never seen a baby getting confused so soon.. hehe
Re: naming baby boys after angels
there was a big issue in my family about just such a situation.
someone wanted to name the child Yaqoob and because his wife is french cdn he would be called Jacob in her family........grandfather threw a fit and refused to allow it......his claim was that either the child is to be known as Muslim and called Yaqoob or he will cut ties.
nobody won.
I always struggle with this need to "make it easy" for assimilation into western society. I agree that you don't want to burden your child with a name that they constantly have to repeat and explain to people but must you make it so non-denominational as to obliterate your identity completely?
My family immigrated to the west when I was a toddler......it was a very difficult time for visible minorities.....we got picked on like you won't believe......and Muzna was not the easiest name for them to pronounce......
there were so many variations .... Moozna, Muse-na, Muzz-na....heck...I was even teased with Mon-za (the name of a car)......but I was taught to persevere and just today I went to lunch with my ex-manager and my brother and in my presence he asked my brother how the family came up with my name because it is so unique........
Re: naming baby boys after angels
^ well in their case, its slightly different because his wife is french-canadian. why should she settle for a muslim/arabic name for her child, regardless of the religion of the child? this has come up before in that is a muslim name only a muslim name if its arabic or is it ok for it to be of other origin so long as it has a beautiful/good/pure meaning? i believe in the latter.
the grandfather should have butted out, imo. it wasn't his call to make.
what did they end up naming the child?
