If what makes a language national language is the condition that majority can speak and understand it, then Punjabi deserves to be the national language of Pakistan more than Urdu. And Punjabi grammar is so similar to Urdu grammar that non-Punjabis who currently can understand Urdu will have no problem understanding Punjabi either.
Making a 'provincial' language as 'official language' will be even more damaging.

if we go to interior Balochistan, interior Sindh, and khyber Pakhtunkhwa, almost everyone understands and can speak Urdu, but not too many people can comprehend Punjabi. imo
It's a terrible idea.
Most people understand Urdu and we have much bigger issues to worry about.
More provinces, more national languages etc aren't going to make our lives easier.
To improve provincial harmony, each province should offer opportunities to people from other provinces.
They can rename famous buildings, roads etc to famous personalities of other provinces.
Promting regional channels to highlight culture of smaller provinces.
etc
etc
all i gotta say is "are u Fu*kin kiddin me??" this makes absolutely no sense.. if these 8 languages are declared as national languages, then more ppl will want that.. what about brahui, hinkdo, hazarangi, khowar, kutchhi and other languages? n i dont see the purpose of making arabic compulsory for kids. what we need is better science and math education. coz we truly lag behind in those fields.. we are already learning english(needed throughout the world) and urdu(which 99.9999999% of pakistanis understand). i dont see why we need mandatory arabic, the holy quran is definitely translated in urdu and english for us to understand. besides, the languages mentioned are declared as regional languages what else do some ppl want??

no khoji, you are wrong here. Urdu remains most widely spoken and understood language in Pakistan, no matter where you go... I've been to all four provinces, and gilgit bultistan, everyone understands urdu, sure not everyone can speak it the way we do in karachi or major cities, but everyone can understand what you are trying to say, even the most illiterate ones who never ever went to any school and nobody taught them how to read... thats what a national language is, and in Pakistan, only Urdu meets this criteria and there should be no national language of pakistan but Urdu.
jiin loggon nay zuban kay naam pay qatal karna hai woh phir bhee karian gai
jiin loggon nay zuban kay naam pay lootna hai woh phir bhee lootain gai
jiin logoon nay zuban kay naam pay Pakistan kay tukray karnay hain woh phir bhee koshish karain gai

its a bad idea. do we need to open this can of worms? why just eight then. as someone mentioned, there'd be many more people who'd want their language to be the national language. The federal government would have to provide its services and documents in all 8 languages. We have two official languages in canada and I don't think it is a very good idea. For all intents and purposes, french is reduced to a provincial language spoken mainly in one and a half provinces while the rest of us speak english.
We can have that compromise in pakistan as well. The federal government should have one official language while the provinces can make provisions to promote regional languages.

I agree, anyone i meet from any corner of Pakistan, they can understand Urdu.
