No wonder he is traumatized. Have your BIL and sister baby proof all the doors so they don’t get locked. Get some spare keys, keep wooden/plastic wedges to keep the doors prop open.
Have the little one follow an adult wherever they go…bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, etc. I hope the little guy feels better.
