Yes you are right he did say that is what caused him to study Islam. The point I am making is that Islam has a beauty that we should appreciate it is far more effective to use that than to resort to Islam as a sanctuary from the lies of the West. The attitude for example that you present as being unashamed about Islam is actually obnoxious and rudeness to people. It is possible to be unashamed about Islam and still loved by everyone or atleast not hated.
The position we are in society is one of dawah, there is no better position that to care for our neighbours regardless of their religion. We must be strong in the face of hatred if we turn around and show others hatred as well then how are we any better than them? RasoolAllah (SAW) came as a perfection to character and in that is an example for us to meet.
