Must have-s at a wedding

Re: Must have-s at a wedding

What was your cake I don’t remmeber. Did I get to eat it? :yummy:

I just came across a donut wedding cake on Pinterest. Now that was something :hehe:

That’s some cake! Damn. Is that square also a tier or just a cake stand? And your cake sounds so yummy and unique.

That’s so true. I’ve seen a few weddings do that too, call the tables by number for dinner, however I’ve also seen that fall apart when people just get up regardless of their table numbers. Quiet like when boarding a plane, they call you by row numbers but people still get up :vivo:

As long as they’re not taking pictures of the guests eating as well :stuck_out_tongue:

That’s a good point. However I think that requires so much planning in advance. At least from what I’ve seen in Pakistan, nothing starts on time. The salons don’t apply the hair and makeup on time, which means that the bride doesn’t get to leave on time, which delays any couple photography that was needed to be done, which delays entrance of the barat, and so on and so forth.

I came across a timeline for the big day, and it’s such a detailed time line, but I think that even might be a detrement, if something goes wrong or delayed then it might just throw everything off. A bit of a cushioning might be a good idea, 5-10 minutes here and there allowed =/

That’s such a good idea. The onus is then on the hosts, even if it means they don’t get to have thieer own pictures taken.

Re: Must have-s at a wedding

I'm not so sure what that is in the picture. With our cake though, we did have a large square tier at the base to help stabilise the cake (as I wanted the cake to be as easy to assemble as possible).

I'm also curious about something else in that picture. It looks like there are loads of small candles around the cake? I think it looks so pretty and wanted to do this but was discouraged by the bakery. I was told the heat from the candles may soften the bottom tiers of the cake and cause stability problems or cause the icing to melt.

Re: Must have-s at a wedding

Yeah you're right, but the candles are in little glass containers, so whatever heat they are going to be dissipating should be contained enough. And they could have just been turned on like, right before the cake cutting. =/

Re: Must have-s at a wedding

Well, I wanted way more candles than the ones in the picture. I wanted the entire table the cake was on to be covered in candles. I saw that at a friend's wedding and it looked so pretty, especially in the evening.

(This would also have served a dual purpose as the concern over lit candles/fire would ensure that people keep their pesky children from touching the cake. :D)

I want my wedding cake done from cake boss guy - Carlos bakery. They look so yummy

Re: Must have-s at a wedding

Haha that's so evil! I was just going to say if the table was going to be covered with candles wouldn't it have made the cake cutting a bit tricky? Though I do see where the baker was coming from in that scenario. That would definitely been loads of candles and then heat. Just out of curiosity was your cake a fondant one or cream?

Re: Must have-s at a wedding

Mezhgan that cake looks so good.

Re: Must have-s at a wedding

Cream. I don't like the taste of fondant and notice that people don't really eat it. We thought about this as we intended to serve the cake (I've been to weddings where they don't serve the cake or where it's only served when only immediate family/friends are left) along with dessert.

We had a sit down dinner, where the servers brought everything to the tables, so there also wasn't the chaos of people going up to where the cake was. I wasn't aware of this at first but it is possible to get the same polished look with cream that you see with fondant. It just takes more work on the part of the baker. :D

Re: Must have-s at a wedding

Just to add to the cake discussion, we had a 3 tier Madeira sponge covered in milk chocolate, then had extra slabs made without decoration, so that we could serve the cake withouth having a costly large tiered cake. So we got both our look and taste it hour paying more than we could afford.

I think if your cutting a cake, it nice to serve it with chai. We cut our cake at the valima and it was served after the desserts with tea. Dinner was a formal sit down affair as was dessert, but tea and cake could be collected in a designated area in the foyer outside our hall, so we eliminated the chaos inside,

Re: Must have-s at a wedding

Also, a point on the calling for food table by table, if doing this I think it's best to start with the table furthest from the food, otherwise people at the back have to fight their way through people near the front that are already eating, this is particularly important if the venue is small.

Re: Must have-s at a wedding

Hmmm im nto sure.

Re: Must have-s at a wedding

@Mezghan that's a lovely cake! Was yours this many tiers also? In the picture, the bottom silver square is a cake stand.

I've never heard of candles destabilizing a cake though. Usually cakes with this many tiers have a rock solid internal support system of dowels and cardboard supports. Sometimes not all tiers are real either which cuts down on wastage but also on the weight of the top tiers.

Our was a three tier buttercream cake mmm... Definitely better than fondant! We chose a lemon cake with raspberry filling for our summer wedding.

Re: Must have-s at a wedding

@**somegroovychick **Ours had one more tier than the one in the picture (7 round tiers and a square base). The destabilising bit wasn’t about the cake toppling over it or anything. It was related to the heat from the candles (I wanted the entire table to be covered in candles) softening the bottom layers of the cake and possibly causing pieces to break off at the time of the cake cutting.

Lemon with raspberry filling sounds delicious! Perfect for a summer wedding. Totally agree about the buttercream! :lifey:

Re: Must have-s at a wedding

^ Wow! I want to see pictures from your wedding! How many guests did you have?

Re: candles... ah! I see!

Re: Must have-s at a wedding

We had about 500 guests. My husband has 5 siblings and quite large a family (his father has 8 siblings and his mother has 6). I only have one sibling but my parents also have loads of friends and family. Add to that our friends. Initially, I wanted a smaller guest list. (Like half of that!) On second thought, I didn’t mind as all of the guests were people who we/my parents/his parents actually speak to on a regular (or semi-regular) basis and are actually happy for us.

You know, I thought that guest list was crazy. The wedding back home though..oh dear. :smack:

Re: Must have-s at a wedding

Wow mA that's a lot of folks! We had 96 guests at ours haha. It was, by desi weddings, a teensy weensy outdoor wedding. Did you have lots of cake left over? We had so much because we had a huge dessert table that people dug into first. No one had room for cake after. Doh!

Re: Must have-s at a wedding

I love outdoor weddings! I don't know what it is about them but they just have such a romantic feel.

We didn't have much cake left over as loads of people wanted another piece to take home (after already having some with dessert)! :p
