Re: Muslims wearing burkas at risk of rickets
afridi,
why are u so badtameez?
Re: Muslims wearing burkas at risk of rickets
No, I dont think anyone needs to wear bikinis to get a fair exposure of skin to sunlight. Many of these women not only wear burkas, but they stay indoors most of their time. And it does contribute to vitamin D deficiency. I guess I haven't heard of it, because where I live there is not so much polution.
They don't have to wear bikinis. Maybe get out of the house more often, and at least expose their face and arms and neck to the sun on a regular basis. Maybe even sun-bathe in their backyard that is sheltered from prying eyes, etc.
The burqa is not meant to compromise your health. So if its doing that, try to find an alternative.
Re: Muslims wearing burkas at risk of rickets
First prove that those who suffered from rickets in this report, wore burqa. I am sure that those who don't wear burqa have more skin diseases because of more exposure to sun and pollution.
Re: Muslims wearing burkas at risk of rickets
I used to wonder about this often (because i am burqa clad myself) and i searched for it on an Islamic website where scholars answer ur queries, and they said u dont need to get the sun exposure ALL over ur body! just getting a few minutes in the day on ur hands and face is enough... its not like if u get the sun exposure just on ur hands, the vitamin D will stay only in ur hands! thats not how it works, so u dont need to go out in a bikini!
Re: Muslims wearing burkas at risk of rickets
that article is hideous,if the quran tells us(women) to cover from head to toe how on earth could it be harming us in anyway?? self harm is haram in islam so we would never be told to do an action which would maltreat us!![]()
Re: Muslims wearing burkas at risk of rickets
Achchha, but tell us where it says exactly to cover ourselves from head to toe with nothing but our faces exposed to sunlight. Can you quote a passage that says it verbatim? Let’s use sense here and not confuse custom and tradition with law!
Re: Muslims wearing burkas at risk of rickets
in hadith it says everything except for face and hands shud be covered after the girl hits puberty.
Re: Muslims wearing burkas at risk of rickets
I demand a ban on Guppies who call others degenerates just because they don't agree with you.
Re: Muslims wearing burkas at risk of rickets
camel milk.
Re: Muslims wearing burkas at risk of rickets
One would have hoped that these jahil practices would have stopped once these people immigrated.
This is the biggest joke I have heard in the history of Gupshup.
Re: Muslims wearing burkas at risk of rickets
I see you haven't been around Pakistan much.
Re: Muslims wearing burkas at risk of rickets
Please show me the source of the news/fact that there women who never see sun in their adult life. I need to see the Proof. Please dont just brag what comes into ur mind about certain fact.
Re: Muslims wearing burkas at risk of rickets
Khehkeshan
I've read in pakistani news paper........ in Sindh pakistan landlords sometimes force their daughters to marry Quran........and they wear all burqas.....Do you know about this?
Re: Muslims wearing burkas at risk of rickets
I have heard the above from two different sources, both doctors who went to Mansehra and Balakot area after earthquake and they told me how difficult it was to treat the women, especially from the remote mountain areas. The men would not let the women come down from the mountains even to get checked up. Plus the women themselves were afraid and the medical team had to hike to their location. Some of the women themselves said they had not been outside their home since getting married.
In another incident, a woman with her children from Saraiki area migrated to Karachi and we helped her find a shelter. She ran away from her husband who used to beat her and keep her locked up. Her exact words were, "yoh mujhe sooruj be nahi dekhney deta tha". Combine these anecdotes with the fact that women who wear shuttle cock burqas hardly get any direct sun light and they are never allowed to take it off unless within their home.
Re: Muslims wearing burkas at risk of rickets
Debator, please take note of my "if" clause. I said "if" the burqa is causing these problems, then find alternatives. The alternatives can be alternative activities, not just switching from burqa to bikini.
So, therefore, "if" this article is untrue, then it logically follows there is no need to find an alternative to avoid rickets.
By the way, I don't support burqas. I think its overdone, and if one wants to really show they are a muslim, then wear a hijab. Burqa days are long gone. (side point - I just didn't want to seem like I support Burqas).

So basically you have no authenticated proof, what u are talking is "hear say".
20 minutes of sun shine directly to ur body is more than enough for generating Vitamin D for the whole day. Burqa doesn't make any problems for anyone, its just western media & some screwed up doctors in pakistan who are saying that burqah makes problems.
I am not saying its a must, but if one wants to have it, let them have it.
Re: Muslims wearing burkas at risk of rickets
What would be "authenticated proof" for you? I'm relaying information I've heard from respectable sources. Not forcing anyone to believe it.
But even 20 mins of sun can be hard inside a burqa where your entire body is covered!
Re: Muslims wearing burkas at risk of rickets
If I was a Afghani woman, I'd take rickets over a bullet to the head in a football stadium any day of the week. Bring on the Burka and some Flintstones vitamins!
