Maniac, the point regarding majority ha been discussed ot death. In the 15th century, Muslim artists were killed because they tried to paint things in terms of realism. Today, you have muslim artists and guppies posting their pictures. Majority interpretation at that time was that only god can create, and create perfectly, if a human was to attempt drawing based on models he was against god. Silly thought isn't it? Fast forward to the 21st century...shold those people who post their pictures or those who create portraits be killed.

PD, but the point is that once you resort to "filth" you lose the chance to persuade, or even talk civilly to the other person, and you make him more reactionary. Aur dana phenkna is very easy, but picking it up is very difficult. I hope you remember…
Regarding the images, once has to look at the hikmat behind those actions, images not being allowed in 15th century had more to do with Abadah and less with creation. But if you are not familiar with Islamic concept of Oneness you will not see the Hikmat in it. At first stage anything which even had the slightest inclination to Shirk was stopped, by time the concept of Oneness got more awareness and hence the acceptance of images, what’s so hard in understand this? According to some Jewish texts Mosses killed thousands of Jews when he came back from mount Sinai because they started worshiping the cow in his absence. So do you think the Jews should do that today as well, no, because that action was meant for that time, and its clearly sent the message out. So the same way the people who post their picture and make drawings are not to be harmed, since it in no way indicates towards Shirk or Abadah. The point is how do you bring out this awareness and some time the process of achieving all this is very painful.

Sorry, a bit off topic, but this caught my attention: This is interesting, I didn't know that about images and photos. Out of ignorance of this whole subject so please, no offense, just label me clueless, is this the reason a lot of Muslim men don't permit their women to be photographed or is it just insecurity like I previously thought?

I think it has more to do with culture or even men, I don’t know about social events but a lot of people use the concept of Hijab or Pardah for not putting their photographs on official documents.

I don't think the topic is to debate the right or wrong on a particular issue. Its about how you convey your message, whichever side of the argument you are on.
Some people, especially those who think they are the righteous ones, will often come in with either a condescending (holier-than-thou) attitude or a downright insulting one. Both of them are likely to blow off the other person.

The fact that concepts and understanding of religious virtues change should be a no brainer. Today you guys are clamoring for ban against female clergy, in another 20 or even 200 yrs you might find it to be a small issue. there is nothing static that is the point. even religion, and since all religion is based on interpretation...in contexual terms as it relates to time and place, it is hardly a surprise that these concepts change over time and locations

In the book, "My Name is Red" by Orhan Pamuk, when describing the world of the miniature artist in places like Herat, isfahan, Istanbul, details in length that in the 15th century, drawing of live things to their likeness and using models, even animals was forbidden per Islamic thought, because mohammed forbade any recreation of his liking leveraging the concept muslims not competing with god. Now, you might think he is wrong. I might think mohammed is wrong or both are wrong. The fact of the matter is that relious virtues not cultural ones were used to prevent artists frm achieving their potential in terms of thinking outside the box-creativity.
that is why we see miniatures as the redeeming islamic art in the world and not realism.

i find it interesting that for those who stand up for what they believe in are labled as having Holier than thou attiture but those who insults ur Prophet (pbuh) left and right , not to mention the pole shoving n sexual inneudos while trying to prove their point are intelligent tolerant bunch on gupshup?

I think one must not confuse a sane argument with people willing to learn ..and a discussion with people who despise everything one believes in and whose only intention is to prove one and ones belief system wrong..under the pretense of discussion.
Consider what goes on in Pakistan Affairs as an example (I am no patriot mind you), we have totally innocent threads on Pakistan Republic Day (March 23rd) and have people attacking the whole concept behind Pakistan..are those people interested in a discussion? As a non Patriot i even feel obliged to correct the misrepresented facts...because it's in poor taste..
