Too bad you did not mention only females, then we could argue over whether they should be stoned or become right hand possesions.
Any influence religion has outside of the spiritual domain, it needs to loose. Inside the spiritual domain, it can preach, divide and condemn to its hearts content.
In such a setup, If someone (mis)interprets, no one gets mutilated, discriminated and/or killed, due to religion, in the real world.
Confining religion to spirituality = one less excuse for man to cut each others throats.

To elaborate on my stance,
Religious differences are, to quite an extent, used to repress religious minorities in Ind/Pak. If religion looses its influence in the sociopolitical domain, of course that will diminish the chances for the majority to oppress and discriminate religious minorities.
People who are from nations/regions where religious and secterian differences have ravaged the societies, need to be in the forefront for calling to confine religion to the realm of spirituality. Their societies would be the main beneficiaries of this.
Use your religion to pray, fast and other things related to spirituality. Don’t use religion or religious identity to promote/create laws and thus division between people. There are enough factors creating that division as is, no need for yet another factor. Especially not a factor thats prone to having varying interpretations.

Yes I know, the article is about the stress the Muslims of India are living in since BJP took over. How a Dr of Delhi called the cab for the airport with a condition that the driver should be Hindu, and how a person bought a house in Baroda (in a Hindu area) but couldnt live there as the local population didnt want him there. After one year he had to sell his property. This is exactly how one creates ghettos, and then wonder why the minorities dont integrate.
