I haven't read your article, sorry. but I saw a show a while back about Marital abuse and how it doesn't always have to be physical for it to be abuse. It can be through a lack of respect and understanding which can lead to a breakdown in communication and thus a weak relationship full of mistrust and bad thoughts.
