Re: Muslim Kids and Fiction
:D
I just don't find it interesting (books as well as the movie), movies have a very slow pace and hence bit boring. My husband liked the movies though.
I was just giving an example with Botter baba. I mean any fiction.

Re: Muslim Kids and Fiction
Why do you think Harry Potter is so bad hareem?
My kids' syllabus is full of classic books and I want them to be able to read and enjoy classics before they try any contemporary stuff especially something like Harry Potter which is not considered a literary masterpiece. They get to listen to books like Narnia, The Hobbit and Peter Pan. Kids who haven't been introduced to classical literature from the start find it complicated, dull and boring later on.

Yeah well I have a friend who wouldn't read any fairytales to her kids (she was a homeschooler btw)....if we look at theIslamic History we'll see that Ayesha (ra) had memorized the whole *Jahliya *literature of Arabs (mainly poetry) so I don't know what these women are on about.
Muslim Kids and Fiction
I think reading habit is a wonderful glorious thing and if you help your child and guide him to see the beauty of Islam and carry it in their heart than reading harrypotter type novels wont shake their belief in Islam. Even in harry potter goodness prevailed!!! Hehe
Re: Muslim Kids and Fiction
I love Harry Potter movies......haven't read the books though.
I'm with TLK on this...... Allah janay but I don't think that your faith can be shaken if it has been instilled with fervor and passion......mainly if you practice what you preach then your kids will not go astray.....
Re: Muslim Kids and Fiction
Seriously ! These people have nothing better to do??! What's wrong with fiction?
Re: Muslim Kids and Fiction
Would you let your girls read books such as : Pride and Prejudice ?
Im curious.
Re: Muslim Kids and Fiction
^ Whats wrong with that book?
I was never into the HP stuff anyway, but I used to read Baby sitters club, Goosebumps, Sweet valley…then VC Andrews and in HS, Nora Roberts. Ummm except for VCA, I don’t think I’d have a problem wtih kids reading any of those. (if those books are even around :hinna: )
Re: Muslim Kids and Fiction
isn't Pride and Prejudice supposed to be a classic? maybe I'm mixing it up with something else.....
my nieces have read goosebumps and sweet valley....I wouldn't have an issue with Noor reading them....
I've read the VC Andrews stuff.....that was eerie....dunno if I would want her reading it.....guess if its in later years of high school then okay.....
Re: Muslim Kids and Fiction
Muzna, I started reading VCA when I was 10-11....Flowers in the Attic....was instantly hooked, and read many of the series (eventually stopped in early 2000s)...
Now that I think about it, the subject matter was sooo creepy and gross......I'd hate for anyone at that age to even know about it...not to mention the quality of the books kinda got worse as more were published.
Re: Muslim Kids and Fiction
Ithink Inspiron was pointing out that p&p is also fiction. Is all fiction problematic?
Re: Muslim Kids and Fiction
^ Yes thats what I was trying to say.
I need to be more aritculate! sorry guys.
But thinking about - one of the bennet sisters runs away with some guy :O
Re: Muslim Kids and Fiction
I think Inspiron mentioned Pride and Prejudice because of the way women were perceived in that book. You know how Mrs. Bennet was obsessed with her daughters getting married and her entire life revolved around looking for rich suitors for her 4 daughters.
I won't have a problem with my daughter reading Pride and Prejudice because it's such a good book and something she would probably read when she is around 16 and by that time, I hope she would have enough sense to know the difference between fiction and reality.
Re: Muslim Kids and Fiction
Other than biographies and self-help books, everything is fiction! Do these people have a problem with Harry Potter and Twilight kind of books because of the magic/vampires or do they have a problem with every fiction which would mean they don't approve of most books.

agreed.....
I don't think I started until much later in high school.......so I think I might have been able to filter out......but yeah...thinking back it was so sick!!!
I even have trouble with the Interview with a Vampire series now.......don't want her into that garbage.
Re: Muslim Kids and Fiction
like… 1 story/mini series wiht that…ok… but if you read any of the other series that came out, they were pretty much the exact same things over and over again: heavy emphasis on how beautiful the main character was, a father who wasn’t really her father, an evil aunt/grandmother/stepmother, richfamily/poor family, at least one instance of attempted/successful rape, and of course…can’t forget hte incest in every single story.
Ok, I"m getting carried away now, sowwy ![]()
Re: Muslim Kids and Fiction
Well it depends on the kid. If he/she becomes too caught up in this fantasy fantasy cult crap like Twilight/Harry Potter then I guess the parent may have a point. Not all parents appreciate their kids' being 'obsessed' with certain things especially fantasy world.
Re: Muslim Kids and Fiction
Why not?
What should they be into?
Re: Muslim Kids and Fiction
Better type of fiction perhaps?
Re: Muslim Kids and Fiction

That doesn't really say anything I mean Harry Potter is a good series. I don't see why anyone would hate it.
