Musharraf admits that some scientists may indeed have sold secrets (MERGED)

PA,

We are not talking about some chaprasi type people photocopying papers and selling it to some agent.

The names mentioned are Dr.A.Q.Khan and Dr.Farooq, two top people at KRL, the highest level possible.

Does anyone think, these people can go abroad, meet foreigners and sell them some stuff without ISI knowing about it?

Are we that dumb as a nation?

Khilari

at any level the point is that it appears to be rogue operations who were pursuing this for some sort of gain. Could others have been involved in it, sure. The goal is to contain this, ensure that this does not happen again. I can fully expect to see other people who may not be named, but were involved in this start meeting strange ends after this.

as far as selling secrets, did we not have the same case here in US..how did that take place. ppl are monitored sure..but where there is a will there is a way.

I don't know what the big deal is.

a) Even if it was done with govt knowledge, it was old govt. So cannot blame current govt. May be they can put Sharief or BB in jail for this!

b) Now Iran is not going to give back what it got. What's done is done - Best is to focus on how to handle Iran instead of ignoring it like NK and then begging China to pls do something.

And none of this will make any progress as long as Bush keeps seeing anything from his own very limited and flawed perspective.

togay..

good points and i agree whole heartedly. it sounds fair, plus any solution which gives us a bonus of benazir's chitrol and nawaz's phainti is a good one.

Pak to freeze Qadeer’s assets

IANS MONDAY, JANUARY 26, 2004 11:13:35 PM ]

ISLAMABAD: The bank accounts and other assets of Abdul Qadeer Khan, considered the architect of Pakistan’s nuclear programme , are to be frozen as he was involved in the clandestine sale of technology to Iran , Online news agency reported.

Abdul Qadeer Khan with his team at the site of the 1998 nuclear blasts.

Investigators had come across clinching evidence of Khan’s involvement in selling Pakistan’s nuclear technology abroad after interrogating Farooq Hassan, director general of the Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) that Abdul Qadeer Khan founded and heads.

Hassan is among the large number of scientists who have been arrested and are being interrogated about the illegal transfer of technology.

Khan had earned millions of dollars and this had been parked in banks in London and Dubai, Hassan told his interrogators.

Investigators discovered Abdul Baqi, who was fronting for Khan , was operating the accounts, containing $2 billion.

Baqi is said to be the associate of a close relative of Khan. The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had interrogated him but had later let him off.

Sources said all matters related to transfer of nuclear technology were routed through Baqi.

The investigation team was also told of financial irregularities in the purchase of dyes used in the test firing of Ghauri missiles.

The price of each dye was recorded as Rs. 339,000 against the actual cost of Rs.39,000. The owner of a factory had provided details about this to the NAB.

Its the same with most Indian news papers....e.g. Musharraf staged suicide attack! Musharraf threaten to kill himself... blah blah blah... ANy report about Pak, good or bad if its from Indian paper or reporter, trash it.

I wanna know, where was ISI?

And isn't there some sort of "Public Information Act" that requires the government to publish it's papers after 10-15 years?

Also, army tou door ki ba'at, I will be highly skeptical if they let go Qadeer and nab a few of his sub-ordinates.

I wanna know, where was ISI?

^ gupshupping with Chory Shujaat?

this whole thing is a mess, whatever else happens, the average person in Pakistan is going to say Mush is doing this for America. The backlash is going to get worse, especially in the Army belt.

Hey Ahmedjee, how do you know him? Im just curious because we know him really well too. Where did you live in Pindi?

I find it also hard to believe this story of rogue scientist. I think Musharraf is just trying the save the last bit of credibility of Pakistan. The army is intimatly involved in the nuclear program, and things don't just happen without their knowledge. What pakistan needs is transparecy and civillian control, none of this "ISI knows best nonsence", since it is clear they don't know their head from their asses.

The list of army/isi blunders is growing.

-breakup of east pakistan
-political games and payoffs
-taliban
-sectarianism
-kashmir militancy
-kargil
-open nuclear shop

Army has done everything in its power to undermine pakistan's internal and external security.

Looks like Abdul Quadeer Khan and other nuclear scientists have stashed millions of dollars in Swiss bank account. Now Musharraf calls them “enemies of the state”.

Scientists ‘got millions for nuclear secrets’

Leading Pakistani scientists who sold nuclear secrets to rogue states will be punished as “enemies of the state”, President Pervaiz Musharraf said yesterday.

He was speaking after press reports stated that investigators had discovered millions of pounds in accounts linked to scientists.

well, this all seems to be a plot to freeze and roll back pakistan's nuclear program...i am sure that no one in the world will buy pakistan government's statements that only the nuclear scientists were involved in nuclear proliferation...the scientists only follow the government's policies, that means that the past governments were also involved in proliferation...if thats so, then the claims of pakistan's nuclear program being under strict control are ambigous, and a very strong reason is present to roll back pakistan's nuclear program...secondly, the present government is on track to make pakistan a lap dog of the indians, therefore we dont need any army...the outstanding disputes like kashmir have virtually been solved, by accepting status quo...LOC= IB....therefore no reason what so ever for pakistan to keep nuclear weapons...

That's what I was thinking as well. So what if these things happened even with govt approval? There's a pic of Donald Rumsfeld shaking hands with Saddam which was plastered all over the newspapers. If we are going to dig into the past then Rumsfeld should be fried in the electric chair for aiding and abetting a tyrant who killed thousands - and with official US support.

Where did Israel acquire nukes from?

It is such a shame that government is using scientists as scapegoats. By saying that rogue scientists sold nuke secrets and collected millions in swiss accounts, government is admitting that they cannot control anything, even if it is a top secret or highly critical operation as nukes.

After watching what Dr A Q Khan is going thru, who wants to work for Pakistan?

Is Musharraf going to disclose his swiss accounts collected for obeying orders? May be not, but next government will sure open it up, that is if Musharraf quits government and stays “alive” and not like “Zia”.

Very soon all of nuke operation will be rolled up, and Pakistan will get some ‘steam-based’ power generators to live with “because govt was unable to contain nuke technology”.

One more time, Pakistan should evaluate its “friends”, “level of arse kissing” (esp Iranian).

^ Well, I think it's an open secret that the yanks want Pakistan to roll back on it's nuke programme, after all they've forced a retreat on Afghanistan and Kashmir...thats the only thing left.

I hate to agree on anything with the Khilafa crowd, but on this one I have to.

We are on a slippery slope:

Step 1 - Pakistan has never been involved in proliferation

Step 2 - We are investigating some people

Step 3 - Only some "rogue" scientists were involved (Currently)

Step 4 - Ooops, looks like all scientists are "rogue"

Step 5 - Nuclear rollback

Once we admit to a small crime, the "virginity" is lost. Let's not forget that.
