he did not try to kill hitler, as he said many time he was nowhere involved in conspiracy to kill hitler, he was very much an ardent nazi committed to hitler’s ideals.
finally he committed suicide in captivity perhaps he was given choice to avoid disgrace and save his family . he was a great general
