MUA Hygiene Practices: Advice Requested...

Esteem, as bride2be said..foundation is directly poured onto a sponge/wedge and blended.. so u don't have to worry abt any infections :) A good MUA will have disposable powder puffs.. there's no harm in asking him/her beforehand if they use disposable ones.. if they don't u may suggest bringing u're own.

The lashes are ALWAYS new, they come with a small tube of glue-gel so no issues with u're MUA using those on u. Sometimes the attach a few to the ends (for those with thick lashes) some need more.

Most infections are caused by mascara wands.. so make sure u take along u're own :)

Shona, sure if u get married in Dubai!

The makeup artiste (without cleaning her brushes) went ahead and did the makeup of the bride's sister and friend using the same equipment and even applied the lip gloss that she had applied on the bride on the other girls with the same double/triple dipped wand.

Thats SO gross!!!!!! How could she not know what a cold sore is?? And even if she didnt know what on earth it is, just by looking at it couldnt she tell that she shouldnt use the "contaminated" brushes and applicators on the other girls!!

1) Can I request my Makeup Artiste use MY OWN brushes (I have the whole set of professional brushes and will buy what I don't have)

2) Can I also request that I purchase my own products that she reccomends?

3) How would I have a trial using my own brushes/products?

4) Are makeup artistes understanding when people have strict hygiene requirements/issues?

Your questions have pretty much all already been answered :) but just wanted to say...dont be hesitant or shy to speak up and ensure things are the way you want....remember you are paying you MUA for a service, you have a right to have things a certain way that makes you comfortable and if the MUA isnt cool with that, you can always find another place that will respect your wishes and cater to your needs. So dont be shy in discussing all these things upfront with her and making sure she understands exactly what you want to do!

She was dipping the makeup brush in the SAME bottle...!! Not using a palette like MUA normally do...!

& yes, I know how the MUA do since I seen others do it that way AND I do that too. I never double dip and always use my palette so ensure that cross contamination doesn't occur.

Exactly, this is what concerns me when my time comes... It was so obvious this wasn't right and I saw the girl hesitate but the MUA was in a rush and kept pressing on... The MUA did such an amazing job but her hygiene was sooooo lacking...

Thanks MidnightEyes :)

why didn't the friend/sister say anything to the MUA??? i'm sure they knew the bride had the sores and could have asked/made sure she used clean brushes, etc

Re: MUA Hygiene Practices: Advice Requested...

Eugh - that is SO gross and totally unprofessional and unethical of the MUA!!

I usually have multiple sets of brushes and also have disposable brushes that I use for lips, mascara, eyeliner etc.

For the other brushes, I have multiple brushes so I will switch to a new brush when moving to a new model. However, in the event that I run out, I religiously clean & disinfect all my brushes before reusing.

Your MUA should be more than willing to use your own brushes and make-up.

I would suggest doing a pre-trial and a trial session.

At the Pre-Trial - meet with the MUA and talk about colors, show her swatches and pictures of what you want. That way she can get a good understanding of your needs, your skin and the look you want. Bring all your brushes and make-up with you (or have her come to your place) so that she can see what you already have and what she would need in addition.

Then at the Trial - have all your brushes and make-up and make sure you've already purchased whatever items she recommended during the Pre-Trial.

Eugh - I am STILL really really grossed out by that story! ICK!!! Shudder

Re: MUA Hygiene Practices: Advice Requested...

That sounds very unprofessional of the makeup artist.
Most good artist have several brushes when they are working on more than one person during a booking.
I attended a wedding over the weekend wher the MUA had several brushes and where she needed to use the same brush she cleaned it with a makeup cleanser wipe before using it on the next person.

I'm sure most artist won't mind if you buy your own brushes, just ask the which ones you will need and the make , (usually MAC).

Just buy a bag of disposables.. and most of u’re own makeup and let u’re MUA use some of hers/his for the contouring.

Bridal makeup, unlike theater makeup is fairly simple.. doesn’t require a lot of tools and puffs!

Just make sure the mascara/eyelash curler/eye liner is u’res.

I buy all my supplies from here:
