I dont think PML-N could play it any different than it did in the situation. It could shun MQM and let it fall back quickly in lap of Zardari or it could show carrot to MQM. It also did not come to defense of MQM after it started the killing spree, nor did PML-N oppose the comissionerate system and it probably would not have objected to dividing karachi in 5 districts. So basically it offered MQM nothing in exchange for alliance. In the end its Altaf that has come out loosing from all this.
Thats how the Pakistani political system has always been. Smaller parties rally around either PPP or PML-N depending upon who has the majority in NA.
