Hehe… I was thinking the same. It was titled “Moving to pakistan” but now the title is different and also the reposts. So anyway…
Wow, thanks for all the encouragement from everyone - I'm feeling better about moving there now. In answer to various questions - no, it isn't a gap year, it's more a career break, or rather a career move. I've always dreamed of living in a completely different culture and finally I'm doing it!
What's a Kaacha, Ashti? I love swimming, but I've been told I'm not going to be able to. Is that true?
And what's a 'paki poster'? Excuse me if I'm being a bit dumb - I really have no idea of Asian culture. I'm worried I'm going to end up offending people alot.
It's great to have found this site - I'm completely computer illiterate and have only just got an email address, so it feels amazing to be able to chat to you all. (I did post something titled 'Moving to Pakistan' on onother forum.) Hopefully one day i'll be able to write in Urdu!
sarah,
dont you worry about offending anyone at all! as someone posted above, pakistanis and paricularly the rural ppl are very simple and welcoming. they are very hospitable and of course they’ll understand that you belong to a diff culture if ever you end up annoying anyone.
just be very cautious about a few things, make sure your home is a safe place and there are good security arrangements provided by the VSO. always wear clothes that cover your body from neck to ankles; half sleeves are fine. and yes, youre definitely not going to be able to swim in the ponds in the open, women actually cant do that as per islamic customs, but in some villages there are seperate isolated ponds for women, if theres one such pond in dadan khan you just get the swims.
a laacha is a kind of a kilt or a skirt that traditional punjbis wear.
youre very welcome to the land of the pure! ![]()
good luck learning Urdu, its very learnable. :k:
I think they might speak punjabi in punjabi villages, don't you think?
^ tru that..depending on how "modern" of a village it is, they speak pure punjabi there..
LOL
"Paki poster" - Paki - short for Pakistani.
Pakistani poster.
