Re: Moving House

We moved a few mos ago, here's what made things easier for us:
1. Label/number all boxes and create an inventory of what each contains. So box 22 = bathroom stuff, box 36 = shoes etc. Helps a ton when you unpack. Also you can use the inventory as a checklist when the movers deliver your stuff.
2. Get the special double walled boxes for fragile stuff in the kitchen. They cost a bit more but you will only need 1 or 2 and your glassware will be safe.
3. As a lot of ppl have said, use this opportunity to get rid of unwanted stuff.
4. Buy wardrobe boxes for carrying your clothes. These are almost like a cardboard cupboard. The have a horizontal rod where you can hang stuff. Saves a lot of time because you can just pick up hangers from your wardrobe and put them on the rod in the box. If you're hiring movers, ask if they can lend you these boxes. Our movers threw in the boxes for free.
5. A lot of movers don't accept liability for moving expensive stuff like TVs. Find out the movers' policy in advance. If you're going to drive to your new place anyways, it may make sense to wrap and carry your TV yourself.
6. This is very important (at least in the US): When the movers give you a quote, find out what type of quote it is. A binding quote means the quoted amount is the max you will have to pay for the agreed-upon load. A non binding quote is just an estimate - what you see on the bill may be completely different. Always insist on a binding quote.
