  • Interview

A Riding Wave of Sucess - Vaneeza Ahmed

Vaneeza breezed in the fashion world from Lahore and took Karachi by storm. Soon she was on every magazine cover and the hot favorite of leading designers. Vinnie as she is popularly known, has traveled extensively for fashion shows, worked for television plays, has hosted shows and also has the honor of playing Vina, the Quaid’s daughter in the movie ‘Jinnah’. Now that’s quite a feat for someone who started modeling quite by chance in college.

  • You project an image of beauty and perfection. Are you able to relate to it?

When it comes to the projected image, it’s hardly me. I don’t think I am beautiful or there’s anything perfect about me. I believe that my nose is crooked and I have beady eyes, but it’s the confidence that’s inside me that has helped me be what I am today. I feel that you have to feel beautiful and not look beautiful to be able to portray a certain image.

  • Describe your typical day.

The work hours are extremely erratic. For the past three days, I have participated in three fashion shows, with shoots spreading during the course of the day. My mornings are usually spent in the salon where I am required to go for makeup, the shoots take place, and then I have to go for the makeup for shows [later in the day]. The biggest drawback with such affairs is that none of them happen on time. For three consecutive nights I arrive home at one in the morning. By the time I take off the makeup and I am ready to hit the bed, it is almost three. Then I have to be up at nine the next morning, ready for another exhausting day of shoots, recordings, and dubbing for television.

  • What makes a perfect model?

First and foremost, she must have an attitude ;), she should be confident of herself and her looks. If you feel beautiful, its bound to show outwardly too. Models need to become what the clothes are and not the opposite. It’s not about Vaneeza, its about what the designer wants the model to look like.

  • Models are always taken for their face value. Does that bother you?

To be honest, it does, that’s why I would like to do something that would not just concern my face or my beauty, but me as a person. It should be about who I am rather than what my face projects. Unfortunately, for models, whether its acting or modeling, it is not about the person but the image they portray. I understand that there will be a day when people get sick of watching Vaneeza Ahmed. Then what? That’s what scares me.

  • What matters more in this field, looks or attitude?

Attitude, professionalism, and looks - all are equally important.

  • With an exhausting schedule, do you ever wish that you weren’t a model?

I am not the sort of person who could ever settle for a routine nine-to-five job. I love meeting new people and interacting with them. It may not be intellectually stimulating, but it works for me.

  • Does the glamour, which is what your profession is all about, thrill you?

I am not here for glamour. Nobody will pay me more if I support a glamorous look. It’s the money just like any other job. If I don’t like the makeup or an outfit, I’ll suggest alterations but if the people concerned are adamant, I will have to go along with it because I am being paid for that.

  • What are the down sides of the modeling field?

Nobody cares to know who you really are, the real person behind the makeup and the glamorous clothes. The few sensible ones amongst us do make an effort to nurture a friendship with each other. If you are looking good, you are hot and everyone wants to know you, but you are soon forgotten the day you are no longer in the spotlight. People have this prejudice that models are dumb bimbos who have no idea of the world around them. At the most, what they will [ask] me about is how much weight have I lost or what my beauty regimen is. People must realize that models have brains and they can be intelligent individuals. There’s more to life than just looking good.

  • Most models branch out into acting. Is it because they aspire to remain in the spotlight?

Spotlight has nothing to do with it. It’s just that they are so accustomed to work in front of the camera that they are very comfortable with it and can deliver what it takes.

  • What does it take to make a breakthrough in this field?

If someone is interested in modeling, then they must contact a credible photographer and have a proper portfolio done. They must then go around the industry with their portfolios and meet the relative people concerned, both in the print and electronic media, who can then give them a break.
