Re: Another nonsense - another bad news!

I hang my head in shame today... this is just totally unacceptable. VERY wrong! you are not even suppose to verbally hurt someone with your words, let alone physically harm them, burning their houses....

they arrested the poor alleged blasphemer and let go of mob? wow!

we need to counter this intolerant mindset and this law should be debated in parliament and abolished! failure to do this, this will continue to flourish....

these ignorants have made a mockery of our religion...

Re: Another nonsense - another bad news!

Even the blasphemy allegations in this case seem to be false, this is all a bigger game plan of driving the Christians out and get hold of their property (what ever is left of them).

Re: Another nonsense - another bad news!

Oh so you are trying to tell me in Pakistan if minorities are attacked it just shows that the people are bigoted with flawed mindsets, whereas in India the same thing happens it's totally something it's own citizens should ignore and instead just chose to highlight the incidents in Pakistan as if it was a pissing competition? Pehley apney girehbaan me jhanko aur phir dosroon ki mentalities ko blame karo.

Re: Another nonsense - another bad news!

thx for the info....

that is what my point was....if mosque imams spread this type of propaganda on a regular basis especially in friday sermons and if our masses are so easy to emotionalize, shouldn't we do something about it other than saying that islam is against this brutal act?

we all know islam is against it but all of us also know that those who did this were Pakistani Muslims ... and it is happening again and again....so obviously there is a disconnect and Pakistani state needs to resolve it...

Re: Another nonsense - another bad news!

Just to be clear. This is not about India vs Pakistan. Or about Hinduism vs Christianity vs Islam. Is about ideology.

Whether it is India or Pakistan or the US, the religious right have lost all sense of fairness and decency. Religious fundamentalism, wherever it raises its ugly head, needs to be crushed. The liberals and progressives for the most part are a dying breed. Society is filled with moderates who stand for nothing. The right wing Haters speak the loudest. And they are the ones bring heard.

I try not to get into which country is better. I try to focus on which philosophy is better - the liberals who fight for equal rights for all. Or the present day religious right whose thinly veiled disregard for minority rights is clear for a reasonable person to see through.

The moderates? They truly are busy being politically correct - not being able to take a stand. And calling the liberals as bad as those on the right.

It is indeed about ideologies. And the left has won this contest by a mile. And then some.

Re: Another nonsense - another bad news!

No such thing ever happens in India....NEVER... Its all ISI propoganda.

And for exaclty the same reason please keep the paradise out of Pak discussions.

BTW... Youtube has a goldmine on the paradise and its scale.

Re: Another nonsense - another bad news!

my question, OK we all feel bad about this. What are we going to do about it.
Nothing as usual.
The shia/Hazara thing is old now. Lets wait for something else bad to happen in the subcontinent.
Then we will all start again, condemnation, disgust and.........then nothing.

Re: Another nonsense - another bad news!

Albeit small but condemnation is the first step, if the civil society (at large) starts considering these things as a sin these these events will start dis appearing. The dilemma we have at the moment is that the majority is silent (read indifferent). The day they raise their voice the government (will have to improve their governance) and subversive elements will have to submit to the ambit of law.

Re: Another nonsense - another bad news!

There's a hadith that if you see some sin from taking place, the first stage is to stop it from happening (if you have got the power to do that, in most cases that should be the state itself or individuals who have the authority to do that), the second level of iman is to speak against it, and the third is to keep quiet but consider it wrong in your hearts (that's the weakest stage of iman).

Thank you SS for appeasing these people.

Mob loots, torches Christian colony in Lahore - thenews.com.pk

LAHORE: Over 175 houses were burnt in a mob attack on a predominantly Christian colony in the Badami Bagh area over an alleged blasphemy incident here on Saturday.

The violence began on Friday when a man accused a Christian, Sawan Masih, of committing blasphemy by making offensive comments about the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and defiling pages from the holy Quran.

The mob comprising thousands of people attacked Joseph Colony on Noor Road in the Badami Bagh area. The infuriated protesters forced some 170 Christian families to flee the area. It was reported that the mob not only attacked the houses but also looted them.

Disturbing scenes of burning houses, streets strewn with debris and blackened furniture were seen as the mob attacked the colony.

An affected woman said people in large numbers came to her home, ransacked it, threw household items out of her house, doused them with petrol and set fire to them. “They torched the houses of many such people who had nothing to do with the incident,” she added.

An eyewitness said the attackers went on the rampage, setting on fire many houses, damaging vehicles and hurling stones at the police. The police did not take any action against the people who were damaging property and setting fire to it, he added.

The police resorted to aerial firing for over an hour in the morning. Later, the protesters started gathering near Joseph Colony, where hundreds of poor Christian families live in small, dingy houses, and blocked theroads demanding immediate action against the accused.

The police initially tried to persuade them to clear the way for traffic, but the protesters turned violent and started hurling stones at them. Several policemen were injured in the heavy pelting.

The police lobbed tear-gas shells and resorted to a baton-charge to disperse the mob. The protesters then retreated but only to regroup, targeting the houses of Christians. Some of the residents had already fled the area anticipating a backlash.

The fire-fighters had to make hectic efforts for many hours to put out the fire. Many rescuers also received injuries while performing their duty. The backdrop of the blasphemy case is very dubious as both the accused Sawan Masih and the complainant Shahid Imran had been friends, and used to hang out together. They had their businesses in the same market, and according to other shopkeepers, they were engaged in some kind of a dispute for some time. A local, requesting anonymity, said both used to drink liquor together regularly and on the night of the incident both went out for the same purpose.

Another aspect of the issue is that the union elections of the iron workshops were just round the corner and Sawan and Shahid belong to opposing groups. Some locals also alleged that the violent storming and burning of the Christian homes was done by the union groups aspiring to gain support of the people by proving themselves as the greater flag-bearers of Islam.

Sawan Masih too, in his statement, has said similar things including the fact that the complainant Shahid Imran threatened him during an argument saying that he could destroy his life by accusing him of blasphemy, while both were drunk.

Taking notice of the incident, President Asif Ali Zardari has called for a report.

Presidential spokesperson Farhatullah Babar said that the president, while expressing grave concern over the incident of vandalism, directed the concerned authorities to ensure the safety and security of lives and property of the citizens.

The president said that safeguarding the rights of all citizens — Muslims and non-Muslims alike — was one of the main responsibilities of the government and it would continue undertaking every effort for the protection of their rights as enshrined in the Constitution of Pakistan. He said that such acts of vandalism against minorities tarnish the image of the country.

The president directed the concerned authorities that no one should be allowed to take the law into his own hands and that law and order must be ensured, the spokesperson added.

Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf also took notice of the incident. He directed an expeditious inquiry into the incident. He directed taking measures to stop the recurrence of such incidents in future.

“The Christians are equal citizens of the land and must be given complete protection. Islam teaches tolerance and assures protection to life and property of non-Muslims,” the PM added.

Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, while addressing a news conference, announced that each affected family would be given Rs200,000 in cash and the burnt houses would be reconstructed by the government. The CM ordered starting the compensation process immediately. He also suspended the DSP and SHO of Badami Bagh and made the SSP Operations Suhail Sukhera and SP City Multan Khan OSDs.

He said the elements involved in the incident including those who provoked the people and instigated them to attack the houses wouldn’t be spared.

He also requested the Lahore High Court chief justice to form a judicial commission to investigate the incident. He said cases would be registered against the attackers under Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) and the culprits would be awarded exemplary punishment. He said the person accused of blasphemy had been arrested on Friday night and an FIR had also been registered but despite that, the barbarism demonstrated on Saturday had no justification. He said the court would decide the case of blasphemy accused on merit, after a fair trial.

The CM made an appeal to the Ulema to come forward and play their role for creating awareness about the minorities’ rights and importance of tolerance in the Islamic society.

Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah said an investigation had been carried out into the allegations and a case registered against the accused.

Badami Bagh police registered a case against Sawan Masih under Section 295C on the complaint of Shahid Imran. Meanwhile, police rounded up dozens of people on charges of arson and rioting.

MNA Pervaiz Malik visited the locality and told the area people mischievous elements were involved in the incident. He said the Punjab police demonstrated the best performance and about 18 policemen and one officer were also injured. Pervaiz Malik asked the people to remain peaceful.

Meanwhile, a judicial magistrate on Saturday sent to jail Sawan Masih on 14-day judicial remand. Police produced the accused before the court and sought his physical remand. However, the court sent him on judicial remand, directing the police to produce the accused again on March 23 along with investigation report.

The arson attack on the Christian colony was widely condemned. The World Minorities Alliance Convener J Salik expressed his deep grief over the burning of the Christians’ houses in Joseph Colony.

Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Liaquat Baloch said attacking innocent Christians was totally unjustified, un-Islamic and needed investigation. Jamaatud Dawah Ameer Hafiz Saeed and Tehrik-e-Hurmat-e-Rasool convener Maulana Ameer Hamza termed the setting ablaze of Christian houses tragic and un-Islamic.

Jamiat-e-Ahle Hadith chief Prof Sajid Mir also condemned the incident and said blasphemy of the Holy Prophet (PBHU) was the worst crime and its punishment was death but only the state had the power to sentence the blasphemer.

Pakistan Awami Tehreek chief Dr Tahirul Qadri, in his statement, said the incident was a conspiracy against Pakistan. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) expressed deep grief and anger at the unchecked attack on over 100 homes belonging to the Christian community in Badami Bagh, Lahore area.

National Secretary of National Commission for Justice and Peace Peter Jacob said there was no denying the fact that fuel for such hate actions was omnipresent in the Pakistani society and whenever there is a spark it all goes up in flames.

Father Emmanuel Yousaf Mani also condemned the incident.Concerned Citizens of Pakistan Chairperson Justice Nasira Javed Iqbal said it is inhuman to destroy lives and property of hundreds of families over an alleged fault of a single individual.

Chief of the Masiha Millat Party and General Secretary of the Human Liberation Commission of Pakistan Aslam Sahotra staged a large protest and sit-in outside the Lahore Press Club.

Mian Manzoor Ahmed Wattoo, Sarfaraz Latif Khosa, Akram Masih Gill, Engineer Shehzad Elahi, Aurangzeb Burki, Syed Asif Hashmi Awami Workers Party leaders Sheikh Mansoor, Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain, Dr Paul Bhatti and others also condemned the incident.

Re: Mob loots, torches Christian colony in Lahore

Mods please merge this thread with the other on same topic. I did not realized there was already a thread on this topic. Thanks.

Re: Mob loots, torches Christian colony in Lahore

So the story is that the accuser and the accused went to drink liquor, after that the accuser realized that the accused (Sawan Masih) had committed blasphemy and thousands of people believed him and attacked the hapless people.

Re: Another nonsense - another bad news!

This.

Read the details of the incident with a heavy heart and truly shudder thinking about what-next.

What's driving the public mad? Under what circumstances or what needs have they become so desperate, so cold, senseless. That's worth thinking about. There's a need behind the need.

Re: Another nonsense - another bad news!

Whom are you fooling here? How can you praise Shahbaz’s performance here when he is in electoral alliance with the same army of Khawarij that burned Christian homes, and who kill Muslims everywhere in the country?

What kind of nationalist glasses do people like you have on? Don’t you have any shame left?

If you eulogize shahbaz for his policy on khariji extremism then you would also be held responsible for massacres and destructions being perpetrated by Shahbaz’s friends like LeJ, ASWJ and Taliban.

ASWJ terrorists were a little annoyed when one PMLN guy said that he doesn’t know ASWJ. So ASWJ reminded PMLN that they are in electoral alliance with PMLN ON THE REQUEST OF SHAHBAZ HIMSELF.

the central leadership of ASWJ has reminded Shahbaz Sharif that he owes his present chief ministership to none other than the Sunni Deobandi religious party which had withdrawn its candidate in his favour from PP-48 Bhakar-II to ensure his election as a member of the Punjab Assembly in June 2008.

…"Shahbaz Sharif approached Maulana Mohammad Ahmed Ludhianvi with a request to withdraw his candidate in his favour. For further talks, a six-member PML-N delegation consisting of Sanaullah Khan Masti Khel, Ikramullah Niazi, Khawaja Ahmed Hassan, Zafarullah Dhada, Afzal Khan Dhada and Najeebullah Khan formally called on Maulana Abdul Hameed Khalid at his seminary (Jamia Siddiqia) in the Panj Garan area of the Bhakar district a day before the by-election. They formally requested Maulana Ludhianvi and Maulana Khalid on behalf of Shahbaz Sharif to pave the way for his unopposed election to ensure the beginning of a new chapter of friendship and amity between PML-N and the ASWJ. Our leadership subsequently decided to oblige Mian Sahib by withdrawing its candidate as a goodwill gesture”.

Re: Mob loots, torches Christian colony in Lahore

Something more for people who don’t think beyond provincial nationalism. Red this and ask the question, who some people are fooling by praising Shahbaz?

Shahbaz has asked his friends not to bomb places of their “enemies” while he is CM, but they have been continuing their activities here and there anyways.

Thanks to the PML-N’s collusion with the SSP/LeJ/ ASWJ during the five years of its tenure, **there has been a systematic persecution of the Ahmadi community all over Punjab. **Numerous members of the group have been killed. Ahmadi graveyards have been desecrated.

The Christian community in Punjab has suffered most under the PML-N government. In 2009, a mob was allowed to torch 75 Christian houses in Gojra. The next year five Christian homes were burnt in Manga Mandi.

Many in the PML-N credit the party’s placatory attitude towards the terrorist networks with securing Punjab against terrorist attacks. Didn’t the graph of the terrorist attacks come down after Mian Shahbaz’s appeal to spare the province ruled by his party? Few take into consideration the damage done to the rest of the country through the understanding. The SSP/LeJ/ASWJ network was allowed to operate from the province as quid pro quo. The offices of the ASWJ were not closed. It is from safe havens in Punjab that the sectarian terrorists operate in other provinces.

Re: Mob loots, torches Christian colony in Lahore

Extremely sad incident. It is quite obvious that people were provoked by some cleric. Don't know what will become of this nation.

btw, it is a really bad idea to have housing societies and residential areas based on religion or ethnicity. This makes the job of terrorists far easier. recently, we have witnessed numerous incidents where areas having majority of particular sect / religious affiliation were hit. It is time, people of such residential areas should device their own defense mechanism so that the attackers may not take them as sitting ducks.

Re: Another nonsense - another bad news!

Are you serious? What SS is doing is what MMA did by appeasing terrorists/extremist in KP while they were governing the province. And, let not point to others...when over 300+ people have been killed in one month, and most of those terrorists attacks were lunched from Punjab. The Punjab CM's words sounds hollow & nothing will happen when you have discriminatory system and laws designed to appease and protected attackers against the victims especially minorities and other vulnerable groups.
