C_A, do the dupatta on head thing. its pretty much one of the few times you'll be able to get away with it in your life, so go for it. just play it up, dress it up, and work it into your look. you can do hair down with dupatta on head- most brides do updo's for shaadi's, and hair down might look more contemporary too.
