Meeting all kinds of people

Re: Meeting all kinds of people

so tell me, with this in car dvd thing, I like the idea but an afraid that initially it will be there to divert their attention on long drives, but then it may become a routine. in simpler terms initially it may be there to keep them satisfied, later it may become they cant eb satisfied unless they have the dvd player.

what have your experiences been like? I have been thinking of getting a system for the car, but am double minded.

Re: Meeting all kinds of people

^^ One thing that I exeprienced while driving in USA (my longest is Detroit to Austin, no where near Mama, although I've driven a lot of miles) is that I never experience discrimination or that sort of thing. I always wonder when our people complain about that

Did we meet rude people, yes maybe, every now and then. Were they discriminating, no. They were equally rude to everyone:)

Mama.. what was your experience. You've driven through more wilderness, if you may, in your recnet trip. Did you see any discrimination (with the exception of that Indian cowboy who did not stop for you guys:D )

Re: Meeting all kinds of people

Fraudia, recently we drove from Seattle to Fresno, CA (near Sacramanto). 16 hours one way, with my 4 1/2 years and 1 year old daughters. I bought older one a PSP gaming console and loaded some movies in it for her. It was good investment. She was either playing her games, or watching Night in the Museum (screen resolution of psp is awsome) or listening to some songs.

PSP is even wifi enabeled so when we were in a hotel in CA, I was able to log on to islamicfinder to find Namaz times and mapquest for some local direction.

You can consider that investment also

Re: Meeting all kinds of people

Like you I have not faced any discrmination, although in some backwater places wherethey probably dont see a lot of 'ferners' u get stares, nothing different than how desis in Pakistan scare at some european walking around in some pind. some stares are a little nasty but few and far between.

my long drives have been kansas city to laredo to mexico city, kansas city to New york via missouri, illinois, ohio, pennsylvania.
Philly to Boston
Philly to charlotte to Cincinatti to Cleveland
Philly to Myrtle Beach, SC
Chicago to Toronto
Chicago to Little Rock
KC to Denver
etc

so no huge cross country drives, but even in shorter drives went throufgh interesting areas in Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, West Virginia Carolinas Tennessee etc

Re: Meeting all kinds of people

my fear is that from teh day I buy it till god knows when every drive would be with a background of mickey mouse clubhouse, backyardigans or little einsteins..atleast until they are old nuff to put on and keep on headphones.

Re: Meeting all kinds of people

Better those noises than "Are we there, yet" moans:)

Re: Meeting all kinds of people

that is true my friend.
or rather what we hear right now repeated over and over.

Re: Meeting all kinds of people

about the dvd in car thingie…I think it’s one of the worst things modern technology ever created. the idea of a road trip is to spend time with your family – good or bad (yes, bad time with all the noise and whinning DOES matter) not friggin’ let kids watch the movies where they get into the habit of being unaware of or ignoring the surrounding.

now, reading a book or playing a card game is different. 'cause it doesn’t draw out as much attention as spiderman on dvd. kids get too much spoiled by watching dvd and they don’t want to interact with you but instead want to watch the movies. with book or a game you still get to interact in between.

You should talk to kids instead. and when you all get tired then you should be keep quiet together. let whole family get excited or bored or tired TOGETHER.

fk dvd in car thingie.:mad:

Re: Meeting all kinds of people

how old are your kids, Fraudia?

(oh God, we started the same thing again, This time we were making Chapli Kabab out of Qeema, we made earlier. Lets bring mama.. in)

And Mama.., how old are your kids.

Re: Meeting all kinds of people

tariq they turned 2 last week.

nyah I dont think we are off topic,w e are still discussing roadtrips tools to make teh trip easier, especiallywhen travelling with kids.

man I remember the days when all we had a backpack and we drove to mexico city for thanksgivign, all teh way from Kansas, just because we felt like it...or when someone would decide to go to boston for the weekend and a few cars full of a dozen folks would be headed to boston in 30 minutes...

Re: Meeting all kinds of people

We used the dvd when the boys got antsy. Otherwise, there was so much to see and talk about. They DO tire though and movies were a real godsend I mean to get out west, it took almost 3 very full days. We did some night driving, not much to see. We drove thru a horrific storm with zero visibility - those were times that the boys were watching for sure. But with DVDs, you can choose what they see and if its fun and educational, nothing wrong with that...we have one farm animal dvd that asks questions and the boys all yell out the answers. We have the silly movies too - barnyard and madagascar but they were really reserved for the times that we really needed to use them. When the little ones are seeing so many new things and such different and new landscapes, its really easy to get them interested in what they see out the window. And the DVD player is now packed away, its not for use around town or even for the 90 minute drive to aunties house, sorry boyz no can do and thats the end of the story, so lets talk about where we're going and what we see. Anyway, the little player we got is really nice, it plugs into the car, the screen swivels so they cant reach the buttons on it and its very compact, fitting on the armrest between the front seats. Its not a permanent part of the car so once we put it away its out-of-sight and out-of-mind. We'll take it out again next summer when we hit the road again!

As far as discrimination, we saw none. Some fascination once or twice but nothing negative at all. We experienced some "child" discrimination, stayed at a place that advertised a "family atmosphere" but it actually catered to bikers and didnt appreciate having little kids around.

They are 6, 5 and 3 years old.

and ps, I love keema and chapli! :)

Re: Meeting all kinds of people

Hi Roman, agar to roman naa hotaa aur Pakistani hota to main tujh say urdu mai baat kartaa aur samjhata … ooops sorry

You want to read a book or play a card games with your kids while driving, well I cant say go ahead cause your kids are there too. Leave your kids with their grandparents, then go ahead, drive a car and read a book at the same time.

You know yaar, joke aside, your suggestion sound very romantic in nature but honestly, the reality kicks in after 3 hours on the road with your kids. They start getting restless and you are worried about distracting them enough so they remain in their car seats so you dont get a 300 dollars ticket for not buckling them up

Re: Meeting all kinds of people

hahaha, try doing a 16 hour stint!!! You can do only so much discussion of new sights before they need a break yeah?

We stayed near Sturgis in a town called Keystone, our hotel had the most incredible view of Mount Rushmore. And there were literally thousands of motorcycles in town lol! We went on this adorable "1880" steam engine ride after paying tribute to the mount and they typically would have a western gunfight/train robbery during the trip - but they do not do this during "bike week" lol! The bikers apparently want to join in the fun :)

But I have to say that they were actually lovely people. They were out for fun but not in any negative way, not how you picture a biker. My attitude has definitely changed about them. Very nice people and we saw them make no trouble at all. The t-shirts and hats were really funny though. I got one of the more tame hats for my hubby, it says something like "Sturgis 2007 made my clothes fall off" and its a bit too racy for him. My 5 year old adopted it as his fave hat lol

Re: Meeting all kinds of people
