Ji mujhe Khana Badosh aur Gypsy ka ilm tha. Mustansar Hussain Tarar ka safarnama 'Khana Badosh' aur unhi ka novel 'Gypsy' mere pasandeeda kitabon main se hain.
In Sindh ppl of Thar still lives like gypsies wandering around due to scarcity of water. Back in 80's PTV produced a drama 'Karawan' based on a Thari girl 'Sukhan' who migrated from Thar and became famous singer but couldn't adjust in urban life as these ppl have strong connection and longing for their land and style of living.

**thank you for a very informative post. they are Rajasthani Banjaras in India...women wearing ascending sizes of colorful bangles from wrist all the way up to mid arms past elbows while men wore huge turbans and smarted huge mustaches lol :)
yes, they have hard time adjusting to the life in the cities and thus prefer their own life styles.
i've seen them around since my childhood. they used to pass by our city and camped/village and used to camp on the outskirts for a few months at a time and then they would move on to another place. their caravan used to be self sufficient with animals in tow.
they used to do iron-smith works...made low tech farming equipments, sharpened knives, make cots etc. i remember once people turned against them and drove them out because they were involved in night time home invasions. they were supposed to be peaceful people but i guess bad economic conditions forced them to get involved in criminal activities.
i still love to see them around.** i remember sneaking to their campsites at night and watching them sing on ek-tara and dance around bonfires. it was quite interesting to watch. :)
**
**there was a movie made on their life style..the name of that movie is "Caravan".

This is very much same with the people of Thar and Cholistan. In Thar unmarried women wear bangles upto elbow and wearing bangles above elbow is sign of married woman.
These people also had tough time in Sindh, when many cases were reported for kidnapping children. Anyway, you can't generalise all ppl in one category.
Thari ( a distinct dialect of Sindhi) is one of the most melodious dialects and People of Thar inherit very rich music. Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai (famous Sindhi poet of 18th century) very well depicted the culture of Thar and their loyalty with the land in his folk tale 'Umar Marvi'.

**thankoo once again for the info :) i didn't know that married women wear bangles past their elbows...i must NOW look for a gal with bangles ONLY up to the elbows!!! :)
yeah, i guess the Rajasthan and Sindh are geographically connected so yeah they are the same people except their religion...they may have the same culture. :)**
Re: Meaning of Today's Urdu Word...Nov. 09, 2011
Majority of Hindus in Pakistan belongs to Tharparkar district, so there is minor differences as far as the religion is concerned between Thar and Rajhisthan. Even their language is quite similar. I remember there are two famous sindhi folk tales in Shah jo Risalo ' Sorath Rai Diyaj' and 'Leela Chanesar' which belongs to Rajhistan.
