Munni, I’m not sure what its for, except that it gives you a good posture since it supports your back and makes you walk straight. 
Ali_R, yeah they are pure silk and quite expensive, I think the minimum you pay is $150-200. Most Japanese women dont even own kimono nowadays.

You know a few years ago I read this book called Memoirs of a Geisha, ever since then Ive been transfixed with geisha, and putting on this kimono for me was like a dream come true, let alone landing up in Japan. :D

It's something about them which makes them feel mysterious, well I dont know but at times they look.....I dont even have words to describe.

Well, when Geisha wear them, obviously they're meant to be attractive to men, and traditionally it was believed that the most attractive and sexy part of a woman was her neck, and the rest was meant to be mysterious. So the back collar, was hung low, just to reveal a little bit of the neck, and that was meant to be very intoxicating. :D

ALi, that white make up is part of the allure and mystery, and the lower part of the neck they leave 'bare', with no white stuff on it. But its only the 'maiko', that is the apprentice geisha (usually younger girls) that wear the white make-up, when a maiko graduates to a full geisha, she doesnt have to wear the white make-up.
