Mbeki’s bug keeps bugging his medical team
Doctors are still trying to pinpoint what gave President Thabo Mbeki an allergic reaction during an African National Congress rally. He was due to leave on Tuesday on a two-day state visit to the Democratic Republic of Congo. The president experienced difficulty breathing while addressing the rally at the Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday. He was examined by a medical team in a tent on the grounds and given an antihistamine tablet, said Surgeon-General Rinus van Rensburg. “That relieved the symptoms.” ‘We will just continue watching closely over the president’ The president was then taken to the Pietermaritzburg MediClinic as a precaution. A food allergy was diagnosed.
On his arrival in Pretoria later the same day, Mbeki was examined again and given a clean bill of health, presidential spokesperson Bheki Khumalo and Van Rensburg said. On Monday experts were trying to establish what ingredient of the food the president had been allergic to. “We are talking to the caterers to find out exactly what went into each of the recipes on the menu that day,” said Van Rensburg. “But the chances are that we will not be able to pinpoint the problem ingredient.” Once all the ingredients had been identified, a process of elimination would be employed to try to pinpoint the trouble-maker. Van Rensburg said the president had no known allergies, but explained that it was common for people to become allergic to a substance at any time. He said the reaction had not been severe. If an allergen could not be identified, “we will just continue watching closely over the president as we always have, so that we can jump into action whenever needed”. At least one member of the presidential medical team always travels with Mbeki.
