Manually secure wirless router

Re: Manually secure wirless router

before it gets fixed, can you post a pic of the duct-taped router?

Re: Manually secure wirless router

Mehnaz use this router as a pill box and buy a new one. You will get the user manual with a new one. The setup is easy on the newer generations of wireless routers.
You can sell this one to TofiBaba for 50 bucks.

I wonder why this is not an explosion of choice for destructive individuals in this world. :hmmm:

Re: Manually secure wirless router

its not an explosion, it just "blows" the PA/LNA.. in the sense that it won't work anymore.

Re: Manually secure wirless router

Well that blows, you just mananged to suck out the fun from this.
Its back to duct tape, Mehnaz.

yup, all this is fine and practical, just follow the steps i wrote properly, maybe take a print out first and then start...

(mac address is nothing to do with a mac, its simply a bunch of numbers+letters that work like an ip address, except its PHYSICAL address, and it remains associated with a network card/wireless card with or without connection).

i think u have everything working, u just wanna make sure people don't steal the internet/ptv .. and for that u just wanna be able to get into trend box and secure its setup..

Re: Manually secure wirless router

:hehe:

o.k. I printed out what you suggested I first do, which is Start - Run - CMD - ipconfig/all

I wrote down all of the physical addresses that showed up.

I then opened the web browser and entered each address just to see what shows up.

Only the DHCP Server and Default Gateway produced webpages.

The IP was 192.168.0.1 (same address for DHCP Server, DNS Server and Default Gateway).

But it opens up the SMC website, which is my secured (locked) router with Rogers. The Trednet router address isn’t showing up otherwise it would have opened up TredNet’s website.

Re: Manually secure wirless router

are you sure you are connected to the trendnet router? coz it seems like you are connected to the SMC' router directly. :|

Re: Manually secure wirless router

she may have the wifi router in parallel to the ISP's SMC router and not using it as a firewall.

Re: Manually secure wirless router

i have a spare wireless N router lying about, i will be more than happy to send that router over, it was used maybe 4 months.

so i can contribute the equipment, who can contribute the installation services for Mehnaz?

I see a few ppl can be her help desk on GS.

Yeah, it's the only way the channels are coming. It's all plugged and connected correctly and the "Unsecure" Trednet network is showing up in the list of available connections in the area ...

Guys, thanks for the offers for a new router, but I don't need a new router. :D If I did, I would go out and buy one. :p Lekin, buying a new router isn't the solution. I am sure I would have the same problem.

I think I should try and delete this network entirely and reload it, if that is even possible. I will look for the box with all the loading materials first to see if that is even possible.

Re: Manually secure wirless router

oh .. so ur dhcp server+defaultgateway+dns server isn't trendnet .. no problem ..

go to ipconfig {enter} and notice what your ip address is.. from what you have shown so far, it would be 192.168.0.2 to .9 (#1 being smc box).

ur trendnet router should be (in default settings) 192.168.1.10 and if not, try 192.168.0.2 , 3, 4, so on.. one of them should be that..

if that doesn't work , will try something else..

ps, if ur ktv is on this TRENDNET system, securing it will cause ktv to not show the channels as its using trendnet UNSECURED (open) box.. so meanwhile we attempt to secure trendnet box, ur ktv box also needs to learn the same security things (passkeys that you are going to assign, encryption settings and possibly ktv's physical address).

Re: Manually secure wirless router

I think you are right Confused. Securing my Trednet is going to lock the channels so we won’t have access to it. :frowning: Othewise the other router I have would work (but it’s not Wireless so it isn’t working).

I think I will just have to keep an eye on my daily usage. Rogers provides a way to monitor your usage so you don’t go over your limit.

sigh

Chalo, we tried.

Thank you very much for your help … and keeping me from blowing up my house. :flower1:

Re: Manually secure wirless router

duct tape on the router hahahahaahhahah man now ive seen it all in IT world :D

:snooty:

Re: Manually secure wirless router

Speaking of everything we've seen, for wifi routers there is a thing called the Cantenna, created out of alumuminum cans. This guides the wifi signal in a certain direction. You may be able to put something like that on your router and face it away from the street and control your signal that way. Search for directional antenna for wifi.

Re: Manually secure wirless router

^^ used those back in the days.. they work great.. though i have a feeling this router mehnaz has, was advertising without an antenna to atleast outside her place .. where device like a wifi-cell was able to pick it up..
