The bottom of the article points out that the money he was making by working illegally was paying for his father’s cancer treatment in Brazil.
So when challenged by the police, he would have thought they were after him to deport him, which would lead to his family not being able to afford to save his father’s life.
And now his family’s situation is even worse…
