Re: MAN-O-SALWA
Hi.
I am a newbee and have been lurking here for a week or so.
Why do you think Zaina and Karam are loosers?
In my view, loosers are classic "baichara/baichari" who adopt a passive role in life and embrace victimhood with zeal. They take the hell that world gives them and instead of doing something to turn the tide, wallow in self-pity as well as feed of the pity of the society ("hai mere sath kya hua ....hai tere sath kya hua...bechari ke kismat kharab hai..." syndrome).
Zaina fought back back. She followed "If life gives you eggs, you make an egg omelete" rule.
If the label of "awara and a loose woman" is stuck on her thru no fault of her own and despite her stellar character, then so be it. She is going to embrace this label and use it to avenge herself.
We may disagree with the choices she made but she made them and had gumption to stick to them till she achieved her goal. She wanted money and revenge and she got them while still retaining her humanity, not turning into a bitter, selfish person.
It is the innate goodness in her soul that has sparked her current crisis of self.
Karam on the other hand sees thru all the deceit around him, how is family and Zari are using him. Still he doesn't quibble in the hope that one day they might see him more than a money making machine.
Frankly, I was starting to think he was unreal, too saintly. How could he not be bitter? How could he not yell and scream?
Yet he never did till he had the fight with Zaina when she invited him over. That was the first time that we saw his inner turmoil come to the surface. We are now getting insight into his thought processes - how he saw thru Zari quickly, why he still acted the way he did wanting to make his marriage a success etc.
I think the last two episodes have been wonderful in this aspect. We see Karam starting to heal. Zaina has not yet begun that journey. She is not ready to talk yet.
Another wonderful phenomenon that you see is how Karam senses this and lets things lighten up whenever he felt things had gotten too deep for Zaina. He is letting her work thru her pain at her own pace. When she is ready, she will talk. In real life, this is such an important technique yet so few people get it.
The play would have not had the depth without the last couple of episodes. It is poignant and bittersweet.

In one sence, you r right that losers are real 'bechara' type people, gaining nothing in the life except being victimized.
But here we r talking about the novels' characters, having their own preferences for the success in the life.
Off course, both of them wanted money too, but only for the survival.
Today both of them are poor becoz they have lost their love(s). They do not count how big millionaires they are!
If the label of "awara and a loose woman" is stuck on her thru no fault of her own and despite her stellar character, then so be it. She is going to embrace this label and use it to avenge herself.
Thats another reason for calling her a loser regardless of the question that whether its her fault or not ...
She gained only this label against the money she wanted and against the status she wanted to show to Sheraz.
We may disagree with the choices she made but she made them and had gumption to stick to them till she achieved her goal. She wanted money and revenge and she got them while still retaining her humanity, not turning into a bitter, selfish person. It is the innate goodness in her soul that has sparked her current crisis of self.
Thats correct that she retained her humanity after going through the process. But thats not enough for the peace of mind.
She didn't right things in order to achieve her so called goals. Although its not easy to avoid the offers of worldly standard successes, but if one has common sence and some tiny religious knowledge, he/she would hardly go for such tasks. (Even she was religious but she chose all this crap. Why? Simply she lost her patience - Thats y I said its not easy.)
Karam on the other hand sees thru all the deceit around him, how is family and Zari are using him. Still he doesn't quibble in the hope that one day they might see him more than a money making machine.

From her getup and her strolling near seedy bars, it appears that Zari has become a street walker, selling her body for money. lets hope that's not the case but I fear it is
