It's sometimes easy to forget that "work" friends are not your "real" friends but there is a difference between work friends and friends that you did not make through work. Never mix personal with work.
Be personable but not personal. I realized this a few years back. Be personable at work, joke, and have fun with your work friends but don't get personal. Never expose the personal stuff because it will come back to bite you.
Everyone goes through their trials and tribulations but you don't want your personal trials and tribulations to be what your collegues think of when they think of you. You want them to think of your work capabilities. Sometimes, we make stupid mistakes in our personal lives and we don't need our personal mistakes to define us as professionals.
