QUETTA, Pakistan (AFP) - Three hundred tribal militants surrendered to authorities in southwest Pakistan, where President Pervez Musharraf says an insurgency is dying down, officials said.
Pakistani troops also seized a huge arms cache belonging to the autonomy-seeking rebels, who launch almost daily attacks on security forces and government installations in gas-rich Baluchistan province.
Four commanders were among the scores of militants who gave themselves up under an amnesty deal at a ceremony in the gas field town of Sui, senior administration official Abdul Samad Lasi said.
Provincial government spokesman Raziq Bugti said more were expected to lay down their weapons in coming days as “people realize they were misled by their Sardars (clan chiefs).”
Last week some 800 militants laid down their arms in the wake of the amnesty offered by the government, officials said.
Separately in a search near the former rebel stronghold of Dera Bugti on Thursday, troops seized 10 surface-to-air missiles, 195 anti-personnel and anti-tank mines, 270 hand grenades, 205 rockets and 201 mortar shells, a security official told AFP.
They also uncovered 392 kilograms (862 pounds) of explosives, 170 detonators and 250,000 rounds of different calibers, the official said.
Three bodyguards of rebel leader Nawab Akbar Bugti, who is hiding in mountains near Dera Bugti, also gave themselves up on Thursday, the official said, requesting anonymity.
Good, more people giving up militancy against state :k:
