Gandhi was great leader, but it takes far less to be a politician. A rare few can be both. Gandhi could lead and inspire people, but he couldnt run a govt. That is why he won the hearts of Indians, but wasnt able to hold the Congress together. He couldnt find a resolution that would have ensured that India would remain untied, and yet as leader of men he was able to inspire millions. Politicaly Gadhi was a failure, he was even a failure as a lawyer, but it wasnt his intent to be a politician.
Nehru and Jinnah on the other hand were great politicans. They may not have inspired the same devotion as Gandhi did thru his ethics and principles, but they did gain a followig by the mere fact that they as politican could mold the minds of the populus. They were also able to gain political leverage for themselves, unlike Gandhi who's unstinting devotion to his principles made it difficult for him to be accepted by the politicians once his usefulnes had wained. Nehru actually ignored Gandhi after Partion, leading up to the assasination. Gandhi for example was against the policies follwoed by India towards Pakistan.
