well, My elders also guided me that I Should keep my hand on my baby's forehead and as nomiCA has mentioned that baby's skin is quite soft and can easily be shaped. I followed the advice of my mother because I have seen such kids who have extra broad foreheads lol so I was afraid if my baby gets the same prob. My mother used to tell me that shaping your baby's head and forehead is one of my responsibilities so i shouldn't ignore that.

There are many things in desi culture and if it is not harming the baby I dont see any harm in doing it to please a very close relative like Daadi or naani.
You have a good relationship with your MIL and she is not aksing you to torture the baby so why not do it for her sake and she is asking you to do it while nursing ...I dont think you would be playing with the baby while nursing her.
Putting a plate underneath babys head sounds very uncomfortable but just putting a hand lightly on baby's forehead is harmless I think Unless you put all your weight on that one hand ofcourse.
