The smoke monster isn’t Jacob …
They are showing the parallel universe of what would have happened if the plane landed without crashing … as well as what is going on at the Island at the same time.
I’m glad to see Claire back. :k: Although, I’m interested in learning how the ‘darkness’ took over her and now Saeed.

In LA, the year is 2004
In that year, they show the Island submerged under water
But on the Island, its unknown which year it is…they had a timeshift from 1977 to some unknown..time in the future…could be the present 2010, or could be before 2004 and some events lead to the island being submerged under water…
So in summary:
They detonate the nuclear weapon in 1977, which propels them into an unknown date in the future. The Nuclear Weapon detonation prevents the French Scientist, Desmond from coming onto the Island. And thus we see Desmond on the plane with Jack. Jack saw Desmond training to sail around the world in that Stadium and that is where he recognizes him from.
What is unknown is Charles Widmore still looking for that Island?
And how did that Island end up under water?
by the way, I am still confused about the smoke monster…
Is the Smoke Monster the guy Jacob killed in the 17th century?
And how and why the heck did it take Locke’s form? And how does it know what Locke felt before he was strangled by Ben?
And by the way, did they ever answer as how the heck did Eko’s brother drug smuggling plane ended up on the Island?
And how did Jacob and Others end up on the Island? Are they people who shipwrecked on the Island and they don’t age which means that the Island prevents aging? But how can that be since Ben came onto the Island as a child and now is a grown man.
They are showing two parallel worlds at the present time. I have a feeling we do not know which world they are really in … and that’s how the show will end. We will find out if the bomb detonation really worked and through them back into “real time” L.A.

yeah i was guessing the same thing but as mercenary said it could be different times like they landed in LA safe and sound but in the later years ended up again on the island somehow.

We don’t know anything about the ‘Others’, who they are and how they came onto the island. I find it interesting that one of them was someone Kate had an encounter with in Jail three years prior. I also found Dr. “Ethan” interesting!! They are all connected even off the island.

He met them because they time shifted into the 1950's where they ran into him.
So he knew they would be coming onto the island in the future and thus he left the Island and to go and meet them.
My guess, the Island being submerged in water will be the finale.
I think in the Island timeline, they are in 2003. And events will happen on the Island which will lead to the island being submerged.
As for the LA Timeline, it will show what will happen to them if the plane had never crashed and have a resolution for their stories.

So Jacob was given the duty to protect the island and now he wants to get off the island.
so he finds all the people on the plane as potential replacement
and in a process of selection, he has narrowed it down to 8 people

Well duh, this was shown in the "Last Chapter" Episode of the fifth Season. So you don't even have to think back to remember it.
The "Man in black" guy is the fake Locke and the smoke monster.
