Hotel depends on what you want to do. If you dont mind the lovely underground trips, then it wont really matter as London is not a tricky City (the people are tricky though).
My friends were visiting me last year and as I could not accommodate them in my 1 roomed house, we stayed at a travel lodge near Kings Cross. It's fairly cheap. I think someone has already posted links.
