Been on it for ages - prolly joined around 2003/2004 - it’s an invaluable resource for professional networking and personal online b-r-a-nding. I can’t think of a reason why someone should not be on it. For many firms that I work with, it’s one of the first sources that is consulted during the staffing process, a general google search being the other.

I highly recommend that everyone utilize it to the full extent possible which includes these activities:

1. A smart summary of your professional interests and work experience at a glance in your profile ;
2. An up-to-date profile with relevant work history, educational qualifications, and other achievements ;
3. A few recommendations from your colleagues, if possible, constituting a 360 assessment of your various job roles ;
4. Regular participation in the Q&A sections that pertain to your field of expertise ;
5. Membership and participation in professional groups that are relevant to your industry and your work interests ;

In addition, like X2 suggested above, LinkedIn should be used in conjunction with other online tools such as VisualCV, Google Personal Profile etc. to have a more comprehensive portfolio that can be accessed by potential employers when needed.
