I like Brown Lentils (masoor) and Split lentil (red daal that turns orange) the best!!! The only way I like Chana daal is in Kaddu Daal salan, or if it is added to Haleem. Otherwise I eat it but don't like it. All other daals, blah I will eat but also cant stand much. I would eat kichri made of Moong or whatever else it is, but the best Kichri is with Brown Lentils made like Pilao :)

You can make any daal taste yummy by complimenting it with good chutney or achaar.
Daal Chawal is also a good combination with any kind of chutney and achaar.

Phil, I make it pretty simple :

soak red lentils …
In two glasses water mix two chicken stock cubes

In a frying pan , roast cumin seeds and chilli flakes … then add quarter cup milk, salt to taste and the stock .. add the lentils .. let it all cook .. when the daal is fully cooked , add mixed herbs in … finally blend it with a hand blender … It will thicken … finally sprinkle some fresh corriander or herbs or even fried onions on top … Serve it with croutons or garlic bread :yummy:

You still dislike black masoor daal? red lentil is its split actually. You like and dislike the same thing!

A lot of people find that black daal yummy specially khitchri of it or daal chawal.

During the months of May to July in Pakistan, if you make kachy aam ki chatni with mint and onion, the black masoor daal and chawal give you a unique taste!
