In basic explanation … sarf is the study of word formation, conjugation and inflection in Arabic and nahuw is the study of sentence structure and meaning and they are the two main areas of Arabic grammar.

For example - in sarf we know that asma can take tanween and occupy any state with rafa, nasb or jarr … it is only when the words are arranged can we say something about their relationship with each other - that is nahuw. Two nouns together both in rafa state can either be:

N’aat Man’oot (Sifa Mawsoof) or Mubtada Khabar and further clues should highlight which is which. Usually it is taken as Sifa Mawsoof only when all four indicators are the same between the two nouns.
