Lay Offs

I don't know if there's survivor guilt. I don't know what criteria was used to make the decision on whom to keep and whom to let go.

I just feel badly for those folks that expected to retire here and now won't be.....mainly because the people leading aren't qualified to lead.

Saadia, well in Netherlands .. I might have problems ... so I might have to move back to UK. I am looking for a job in Austria .. but I dont speak German .. & its an issue ... though my work doesn't require German knowledge. Problem is that Austrians dont pay like Netherlands .. or in other words I should say that TAX rules are not as good as Netherlands.

Najim, what if you don't speak german, there are many Austrian & International firms over here that require english language knowlege and learning german is no big deal at all. I think that Austrian firms do not pay that bad, some experts that are well experienced get paid like hell in my company..like you yourself said that the living costs are quite low here in comparison to Germany, the Netherlands, north europe. I don't know how the tax rules are in Netherlands so can't really compare, here in Austria they are relativ high but I do know that Austria is one of the few countries that pay 14 salaries to everyone plus the benefits, it makes it a super place to live and work.

If you need the contact address of my personal manager, pm me and I will send you the info where to contact him, yes german is required here but I think you should try atleast and talk to him as we are allways looking for computer experts with experience in Networks, Unix field ect.. It can be a good start in Austria, later you can move one to some other company if you wish.

Saadia,

Thanx for offer .. I'll ask u if I need help, I appreciate.

Regards
Najim.

speaking of layoffs, in my company the business group that I worked with was at one time 4500+ ppl, friday it was down to 1400 and i was one of the remaining 1400. the survivors are being acquired by a diff company, 200 of us decided to part ways.

a tough harrowing 6 months for all of us..ended well for some badly for others.

I have decided to move on from the company and tomorrow is my last official day. I will miss my friends, i will miss my seniors, the mentoring, the fun, the good times.

Toughest career decision I had to make ever.
but in the last 6 months, had to say goodbye to more friends than i ever want to.

anothe rpal of mine who works at motorola has the exact same sentiments...more goodbyes than he can handle.

corporate world could be a real byatch...but that is life

Wow! man 3000! thaz a big number. What happened to the company anyways?
These are very uncertain times. I have moved form implementation/consulting for a software vendor to I.T project management for an automotive industry. It is a corporate environment and I'm adjusting to it. The pace is kinda slower than what I am used to but my kiss-up to superior attitude is getting polished everyday. I don't know if it suits my personality but hey can't live without money either.

So whats next for you...where u headin' yo!

Boss

I am moving on to take on a role in international marketing strategy with a multinational (name undisclosed- dont want guppie stalkers calling me)

I know pace will be slow, no weekly travel, some international travel and all. But with plans for a family and all. I guess its all good timing, plus I ride out the bad times for the consulting industry. May return to consulting in a few years though. who knows
