During the past one year I know of at least 6-7 incidents of armed robberies of my close relatives who have been mugged during the past year (some unlucky enough to be mugged twice). Situation has deteriorated and the police does not want to register the fir. If one is lucky the fir one finally gets registered (after bribes) but the original crime will not be mentioned. The report would state that ones possessions fell down somewhere, and not dacoity as that deteriorates the crime statistics. This is the story of the city where most of Punjab’s funds go. If unchecked Lahore is going the same way of Karachi, and the provincial government does not seem to be bothered.

I can understand the police not wanting to register an FIR in order to manipulate stats. But why would anyone want to insist on getting an FIR registered, that too after paying bribes? What exactly does that accomplish? Is the registration of an FIR a guarantee that the stolen goods would be returned, and culprits caught?
Specially in Punjab and Sindh, where the police forces have been so politicized, and rendered useless, why would anyone bother to register a complaint with them?
