Re: Laser Hair Removal - What to know
I can recommend my own in London. I have scoured London and the surrounding area for electrologists and the electrologists in the salon I go to are the only ones I'd really recommend.
The lady I visited with the basic machine is much cheaper and the facial work seemed fine. Didn't like the body work so much. However, I know one person who had some treatment and was not happy with it at all (she gave up on UK electrolysis completely and went to Spain to have her arms, tummy and upper lip cleared - it would have been too expensive with my electrologist), but another who is having pretty good results with her. However, everyone who has been to my electrologist has been satisfied only until it comes to the point where their magnification is letting them down. All the electrologists I have visited here use magnifying diopter lamps, whereas the super duper ones use surgical loupes.
Re: Laser Hair Removal - What to know
hmm who's your 'lady' and how come everyone's going to spain?
Re: Laser Hair Removal - What to know
I will pm you about my electrologist. She is BIAE registered, as are the others in the salon.
Lol, not everyone. Just some UK people who are on a hair removal board and have found UK electrolysis lacking and know about her. As I said, her work is very impressive and she can work in ways that the majority of electrologists do not even understand or know about about. They don’t have the right equipment. For example, 9hrs with my electrologist (there is a 9hr package which makes costs reasonable) would not get my sister clearance of her face and neck, in addition she would not do it all at once because they don’t have the equipment to safely do that to the skin. One day with the Spanish electrologist will get her majority clearance of her face and neck, coupled with a high first zap kill rate; meaning most of those treated hairs will not come back. What will come back in the subsequent weeks and months is the next hair cycle. So it’s only a matter of about 3 clearances to get through those. With most other electrologists, they will only be able to do this with hairs in anagen.
I don’t want to go into this too much, because you need to know a fair bit about the different modalities of electrolysis, insertions etc to understand why it’s so preferrable.
But anyway, I don’t want to put anyone off work here. I have had great results with my electrologist, the only thing is it is slow and probably more expensive in the long run. I went every few weeks for 20mins, with this time winding down to just a few minutes after about a year, for my upper lip. My sessions would still be 30-60mintues long as I’d use the rest of the time to work on other areas as well. For small areas such as the upper lip, or eyebrows, sideburns, some chin hairs, clearing underarms after laser, feet and toes, any good electrologist can do it. But if I want my arms finished, or if someone wanted their torso or back done, it would be a long time consuming and lengthy process if you go someone with just standard equipment.
Re: Laser Hair Removal - What to know
Am thinking of stopping laser to the face now, and starting with the electrolysis. Stoppit how much time do you think is needed to clear up hair left from laser? Also do you need to be consistent with the treatments same as laser?
Re: Laser Hair Removal - What to know
Hi CE. It really depends on the amount of hair left. Your electrologist should be able to estimate.
You don't have to be so consistent but if you want quick and good results, you should probably put more effort in that would have to for laser.
Let's assume you have a certain amount of hair on your face and it will take 3 hours to get all of it. The best thing to do it get it cleared asap, before much new growth comes in. So perhaps 1hr a week for 3 weeks.. or as long as it takes to achieve this clearance. Then you just need to wait until you have sufficient hair coming through to warrant another session. So maybe after 2 weeks, you feel you have 30mins of hair, so book a 30min app. Over time, the treatment sessions will get shorter, with a longer gap between them. I imagine your follicles have been weakened by laser so you probably have to spend less time.
I like the maintenance strategy. So once clearance is achieved, keep going back regularly for short treatments to clear up whatever is there before it becomes too bothersome. However, if you don't go for 2 months, it's not a negative thing. A lot more hair will come through, meaning you will need to spend longer on the table when you get back, but it will still work.
For the spain thing, because we can't go so often, my sister will just have a few big clearances. So in between, since it will be a period of months, there will be a lot of hair there by the next appointment. This is more similar to how laser works, assuming the laser is carried out properly and not 4 week intervals.
Re: Laser Hair Removal - What to know
I only know basic stuff. There are all sorts of lasers used for scar treatment. The hair removal lasers can also be used for scars but at different settings, then there are also lots of other kinds of laser and ipl systems that are also used. So, I don't know which are the best but I'm pretty sure it will depend on the type of scars to be treated. What sort of scarring do you have?
You DO need to be careful though because any laser can induce hair growth on the face. I have heard of a number of cases where women had laser treatments for acne scars and ended up with more hair instead. To be honest, if you have active acne then you need to try and resolve it at its cause. Often it's just matter of time and it will clear up on its own. If your acne has stopped but you have a lot of scars, they WILL fade over time even if you don't do anything. Probably the best thing for speeding up this process would be chemical peels.
If you have 'pitted'/'icepick' acne scars, then no laser, peels or microdermabrasion will fix these. There are some techniques I have read about but they aren't widespread yet. I think we will need to wait a few more years and if they work, they will become more prolific. Just like when I started researching laser 10 years ago, there was hardly anyone treating black or asian skin.

Hello
Thanks a lot for the info. I have gone through some websites who sell IPL machines online for $500. What to u think about those?

Most professional IPL machines are junk so I wouldn't waste my money on something that costs $500 and probably a fraction of that to manufacture.

Hey, I'm really sorry I don't know much about this. From what I do know, I believe Laser only works on scars that will heal in time anyway, it just speeds up the process. You would also need multiple treatments which will cost quite a lot. Have you tried the creams and other suggestions for post surgery scars? I have used Bio Oil and Rosehip oil to dramatically fade such a scar. In the beginning I wasn't using anything regularly. I started properly after about a year and applied oil daily, then I started seeing a huge difference in just a few months.
Re: Laser Hair Removal - What to know
I'm having the same areas lasered as you have had stoppit, and I'm 4 treatments done, with 5 more to go. Greatest response has been obviously in the underarms/brazilian area, with 90% hair gone, followed by lower legs which have had about 80% response. Upper legs and arms have proven to be a bit more resistant, but hair are also finer and less coarse there so that'll take more treatments.
It's been a great investment, however I do sometimes get palpitations at the overall cost, but I guess if you divide it out over the years, it's really not much. I absolutely love not having to worry about the underarm/brazilian areas, that has been the most satisfying aspect of it all.

hey stopit very informative thread, can u recomend any electrologist in US ?

That sounds like a lot of treatments. You shouldn't need more than 6 (usually less), to get all the hair in the cycles. Providing they are spaced as I mention in the opening post. I suspect they are having you come back sooner than you need to.
It's not about more treatments for the finer hairs. They will never respond as they will never absorb enough energy to destroy the relevant follicular cells.
It is an expensive process and personally I would not want to waste money on treatments that won't work. So once the remaining hairs are fine, I would stop. If one wants really clear the area of all hair, it is inevitable that they will have to finish up with electrolysis. I've done this with my underarms and plan to do with with my arms. In fact, if I had access to the electrologist I have now, back then, I would never have bothered trying Laser on the arms (I was curious to see how much effect it would have anyway). As 3 clearances, spaced 3-4 months apart would have had me finished and hair free.

Hi, glad you found the info useful, a rec for an electrologist?
Re: Laser Hair Removal - What to know
Yes, please. Btw, your avatar and screenname go so well together, haha.
Re: Laser Hair Removal - What to know
I am having laser done and have had the best results ever (face area), absolutely recommend it. It's a YAG machine and I have noticed a great reduction, some areas a full 95% but the upper lip is around 75%, growth is non-existent except on the upper lip where I still grow patchy hair but very slow and not dark or coarse. Overall, i am so pleased. Highly recommend it.

Are you still having treatments? You can only really judge the level of reduction 6 months -1 year after stopping treatments.
Out of curiosity, how long have you been having treatments for and how many so far?

Oh, I didn't know that. I hope the good results follow through and in case they do start coming back, most laser places offer a follow up for $75 that treats the entire area as maintenance. My laser treatment goes on until there is 95% reduction so after 6 treatments the other treatments are free. And i've been getting it done since september 2010 and so far hair in all other areas except upper lip (where it is coming in 20% of the area back but very very fine and tiny and grows VERY slowly), so, so far I've had great results thus far.
Fingers crossed.
