Well.....I used to share my salary information until one day someone said to me that they were expecting more money from me because I make that certain amount. What people forget is that the yearly salary is the gross number. Then you have to subtract the taxes, 401K, FSA, Insurance, Stocks etc. and by the time you get the net amount, it is WAY less than the gross amount that everybody sees and remembers.
I still share the information with immediate family and just one or 2 close friends that share their information with me.
only people who know my salary are my wife, and my parents.
even my brothers know ballpark of where I am.
oh yeah and aside from them, my mortgage company, HR folks, boss, his boss..u know the drill
The only people who should know a guy's salary should be his wife and parents. Rest, if someone mention in a conversation, keep it to yourself. If they don't, you don't need to know.
worse comes to worse and if someone does not give up, throw a ridiculously low number, or an insanelt high number and stick to it. make a mickey outta them

I mean why is someone bothered if the other person does not want to give that information?
and in places like Pakistan where its somewhat okay to talk about it, it creates issues like jealousy, lame competition (less aming the guys being compred but their ammas, begums etc), and if someone is not making enough in the eye of others, that person to be made to feel smaller etc.
^ And you are getting a general answer, what else do you want? I mean weren't you looking for an answer to why people hide their salaries? We gave you an answer that we hide it because it's personal and sometimes guys get compared with others in the family. If you make more money than someone else, they expect you to contribute more if you go out etc. or they just taunt you k itna kamaatey ho magar kharch itna kyon nahi kartey ho and bla bla bla. Relatives eye you as world bank when you are making more than them. They don't realize that because you are making more, you have greater expenses.
It just opens a whole can of worms. It's something personal, that's why we keep it to ourselves.
