MQM state minister resigns, quits assembly

KARACHI - Minister of State for Religious Affairs Amir Liaquat Hussain resigned on Wednesday from the ministership and the National Assembly membership.
Talking to TheNation, he said that he had informed the party leadership about the resignation which he had already submitted to the Speaker of National Assembly.
He said that he had tendered resignation because he had been very busy in his new responsibility in a local TV, as a head of a department. He said he had been working for the TV for a long time. He would continue his job for the MQM as a worker.
The Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s Rabita Committee has said, in a statement released from Nine Zero, that Amir Liaquat tendered his resignation because of personal reasons. The Committee said that he had been quite busy in his personal engagements, therefore his constituency had been deprived of his proper attention.
Dr Farooq Sattar, Deputy Convenor of the MQM Rabita Committee and MQM Parliamentary Group Leader in the National Assembly, told TheNation that the party had already been informed that Amir would tender resignation because he was not paying attention to his constituency and ministry. He said that Amir Liaquat would continue as a member of the MQM.
A well-placed source in the party said that Amir Liaquat Hussain’s aggressive comments on a private channel against the blasphemer Rushdie were the main cause behind his resignation from the ministry. He added that his statement supporting Lal Masjid issue was another reason that had compelled the party leadership to ask him for resignation.
When TheNation asked Dr Amir Liaquat whether his statements about Rushdie and Lal Masjid were the reasons for his resignation, he denied it saying that he had tendered his resignation due to personal reasons.
Essa Naqvi from Islamabad adds: MQM sources told TheNation that he was forced by the party leadership to resign. “The party did not like Aamir’s habit of self-projection.
He was time and again asked to give time to the party as well as his constituency but he always kept himself busy with his commitment to work for a TV channel. On the same issue, he had some verbal brawls with a few party leaders as well but Amir did not give up his routine,” the sources said, adding that this continued situation compelled the party leadership to ask him to resign.
