Re: Lahore to get monorail
Because the beaurocracy in Karachi is so entreched that making a telephone booth would take years of planning and false starts! Really wish Karachi the best, but nothing seems to happen there what so ever.

Re: Lahore to get monorail
well lahore is a big city i am sure and i think its about time that south asian countries start being more practical. i am from delhi in india and we even have our own subway system into place now. ive been in it and the commute which took 1.5 hrs now takes just 8 mins. i mean its really rediculous. it is good from many aspects as tourists would probably not be that much scared to take our busses lol…
delhi metro pics here …

Re: Lahore to get monorail
You know, I heard this monorail project has been in planning for the past 15 years?!?! That true?
Re: Lahore to get monorail
For crowded cities monorails just take up disproportionate road space and slow everything else.
Why do they build monorail? For about same effort, can't they lay 2 rails down and get real trains that run faster?
Re: Lahore to get monorail
Well, if they plan it right, thats a BIG if, they could probably control the overcrowding. They may be able to reduce the traffic by promoting monorail too soo.

Lahore Ring Road: Bids for phase-3 to be received in August
By Khawaja Naseer
LAHORE: Pre-qualification bids for the third phase of the Lahore Ring Road (LRR-3) will be received in the first week of August, Punjab Communication and Works (C&W) Department officials told Daily Times on Friday. C&W authorities have also planned to award the Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) tender to beautify a kilometre-long portion of LRR-1. Officials said that as many as 25 national and international firms were interested in the three-billion-rupee package for the LRR’s third phase (from Sabzi Mandi to Mahmood Booti).
Officials said that the LRR-3 project would start from the bridge next to Sabzi Mandi, and the initial plan was to construct a flyover to cover the railway tracks near Badami Bagh station. Bids for the third phase were originally scheduled to be received last month but were delayed because of the delay in the completion of LRR-1. Officials said that construction work on LRR-1 was started on November 22, 2004, and was to be completed on May 22, 2005. However, by the completion date, the contractors Khalid Rauf and Company had only completed the bridge joining LRR-1 to LRR-2 (Niazi Chowk to Sagian bridge) and the dual carriageway that had been opened for traffic from Azadi chowk to Shahdara. Officials said that other parts of LRR-1 including four loops and ramps and the road joining Niazi Chowk to Sabzi Mandi were under construction.
The four loops and ramps of LRR-1 are adjacent to the main bridge and will be used to link traffic from Sagian bridge to Mahmood Booti, Babu Sabu interchange and two city roads. Mian Farhan Rauf, director Khalid Rauf and Company, said however that work on the first phase was almost complete and only finishing touches were being applied. He said the slow pace of construction work was because some buildings on land that the government had purchased for the Ring Road project had still not been demolished. He added that the network of underground water and gas pipes and telephone cables also hindered construction. Because of the delay, he said, the proposed three-way roads from Sabzi Mandi to Mahmood Booti, originally part of LRR-1, had now been extended to LRR-3. C&W Minister Chaudhry Zaheeruddin told Daily Times that he was “not properly aware” about the Ring Road’s pace of construction, adding that the C&W provincial secretary would have technical information on the issue. However, Ahmad Yar, the C&W provincial secretary, was unavailable for comment.
